So it goes like this...

Finally managing to discuss diving with work colleagues today (happy days) and one of them pipes up that her boyfriend did a bit of an introductory dive last year in Cyprus. As the healthy conversation went on, she attempted to say..."i guess when your breathing oxygen..." NOW WAIT!!!! "It's not 'oxygen' we breathe".

I'm only recently OW cert and very in-experienced but already i have found myself trying to lightly educate people in the basics of SCUBA. As a post in the recent "You know your a SCUBA diver when..." thread where someone mentioned how easy it is to snap when non-divers mention about us breathing oxygen, isn't it funny that I, being at the bottom of my dive career, already find myself educating the non-diving community even though they probably don't give a **** what is in the tank!!!!

Maybe i need to get a life?

It's normal, especially at your experience level.

Thank heaven for that Walter! I hope it gets more placid in time when i hear things like this!:D

I wish I had a dollar for every news article I've seen referring the the "oxygen" that firefighters are breathing from their SCBA.

But, but.... we are breathing oxygen... it is the life line for us. Just aks them: ' Yes we do breathe oxygen.... but do you know what percentage of air we breath it at?' Just to confuse..:mooner:

and "you are" is spelt "you're"; your is possessive. You're not the only one who can make corrections ;) lol!

Oh Scotty, talk to non-diving folks about your diving experiences and you will hear more that you care to. I have heard so many old wives tales, incorrect assumptions of what we breathe, what equipment we use, how to do things etc.

After a while you realize people would rather believe what they see on tv or in the movies.

Now that would just be more hassle than what it's worth!:D
