Oddly enough, I found that when I get involved with something like photography, or in my case, taking pictures, I burned less air. I think it's because the act of looking for and taking photos relieves some of the stress or prevents me from dwelling on things I need to relax about.

Possibly because you're staying in one spot more, focusing on your shot and you are keeping your movements to a minimum.
 
Along with being flat in the water and keeping your hands still, learn the frog kick. You get a period of free glide for every cycle, during which your legs are still too.
