Sue-ba Lips:
"Finally, no dive op would fail to notice 2 missing tanks at the end of the day."

Unfortunately, this dive op did fail to notice two tanks missing. Remember, this IS based on a true story. What actually happens in the water is purely speculation and "movie spectacularized." But the fact is that the two divers that this movie is based on did get left behind and they died.

This is not the only incident of being left behind by a dive op either. Scary! :11:

Agreed, I stand corrected. Anything can and has happened. I believe that the actual "stranding" (for which I can no longer find links to in Scubaboard -- am I just a bad searcher?) was realized when the boat returned to port after a 1-2 hour return trip. In the movie, the mistake wasn't detected until the NEXT MORNING. For artistic reasons, the movie works better this way, but for, me, it diminished some of the realism.

KazInAz:
Tell her how unrealistic it is and that none of this movie is true after they entered the water. The rest is just speculation and Hollywood dramatics. Look up the actually events.
When they first started on the trailers about 4 months ago I did a google search and came up with nothing. Does anybody have an url that describes the actual events?

Thanks,

Jerry

"Open Water filmmakers Chris Kentis and Laura Lau say the inspiration for their low-budget movie, shot during the couple's weekends and vacations, was the real-life story of Thomas and Eileen Lonergan. The young Americans, who never were found, were stranded in 1998 when their 26-passenger vessel departed without them from a popular dive site along Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The incident prompted a tightening of the Queensland dive industry's already stringent safety rules."

I remember reading about it but can't remember where. Sorry, I tried to find it but this is all I could come up with.

Hmmm.... there have been a few dive boats I'D like to have left behind in my career (like the one that was supposed to take me to San Clemente Island but ended up diving three mediocre sites on my own Catalina, and I couldn't simply disembark at home... I had to go back to the mainland and catch a boat back to Catalina)!

Reasons not to see the movie,
1.$15 for the 2 tickets
2. $ 6 for popcorn
3. $ 7 for 2 drinks
4. $ 5 nacho

Add that all up and I almost have enough for a boat dive :eyebrow:
I'll rent it for my hubby, but only after I have a freebie coming to us.

sessions:
but for her, it has pretty much closed the "let's get her certified door". A bit of advice....dont take someone who you want to get certified later! :11:
Remind her that there are no sharks in Lake Perris :)

I'll see it. And buy the DVD.

But then, I'm a little nuts. :eyebrow:

My goal is to own every dive movie, or movie that features diving, on DVD.

(That way, when I write, direct, and star in my own, I'll know what mistakes not to make.) :crafty:

Well, I made the ultimate msitake today....I took my wife to see open water. I have been talking her into getting certified, so she can dive with me. I have been making headway...until we went to the movies today....what an idiot? The movie isnt that disturbing, for anyone who has dove around sharks....but for her, it has pretty much closed the "let's get her certified door". A bit of advice....dont take someone who you want to get certified later! :11:
lake placid would be another option :crafty:
