Diver Kat----you actually ARE "doing bottled water" in restaurants even if you ask for a "plain old glass of water with ice" since they are giving you water from the giant size bottles which are purified and quite a bit cheaper than individual small bottles.......no way you are drinking tap water!........haha...........just FYI..........Betsy

All this talk of food & drink has me craving some chuletas from La Mission .... and I won't get any till March! :(

I'm with ya there!......(but don't tell anyone that we're beating the system......lol)

It's interesting how this thread has become a bash on AI's. In more than a dozen trips to both the mainland and Cozumel we've only stayed AI's but but that's not to say we've only camped out at the resorts without experiencing anything off the resort. We do our best to venture into town as often as we feel like it. Honestly, in so many trips having experienced everything I feel there is to experience, nowadays I'm content to camp out at the resort. I go to relax and dive. I don't find it fun anymore to deal with the crowds, traffic, fumes and constantly being asked to buy something. I know solace can be found away from the square back in the hood but then you see how the locals live and it's honestly quite heart breaking to see.

I don't go to Cozumel for the food... in fact, I really don't go anywhere with the intent to gorge myself on exotic, exquisite cuisine. While in Mexico, or anywhere else, it's subsistence living for me. I used to have a very sensitive gut. Getting TD when traveling was always part of the experience. Since 2004, I've not had one incident. Sure I practice a fairly stern routine with what I do as I expressed in my earlier post. Coincedentally, I started enjoying sushi back in 04 which might have helped build the immunity my body was lacking. I don't know but either way, I don't get sick anymore whether it's eating at the AI, restaurants in town, eating ice or drinking excessively. FWIW, Just about every day for lunch I have a hamburger at FA with a nice dollop of mayonnaise off the chow line without problems.

Pissy wetsuits in the rinse tank!?!? Leave it to DandyDon to think of it. That is just nasty! I never thought of it but then again, I don't see many people putting their wetsuits in the rinse tanks.

Excuse a silly question, but what is an "AI"?
All Inclusive: includes meals, may include booze. Common on Cozumel and Roatan anyway...

Peter,

It's All Inclusive...all of your meals are included in the price you paid for the hotel. You get to eat at the resort restaurants for free...well, not free, you already pre-paid for it when you booked.

Dang Don, you beat me to the draw again on your post...We may have to re-name you Quick Draw McDon. :D

I've done AI and I've done fend for yourself. The AI makes life easier and the better ones like Occidental Grand have very good food. Scuba Club is a bit plainer but also very good. Others, like Reef Club and Hotel Cozumel, ... well, the price is sometimes right and you won't starve.

With an AI, it is easy to do 3 or 4 tanks a day and not be rushed trying to coordinate meals and diving.

At the Blue Angle...
I like to keep juices, coffee maker, and breakfast rolls in the room;
Lunch at the cute outdoor cafe above the dive shop;
Go into town for dinner.

I have done AIs on Coz and one visit I was appalled at the outdoor lunch: lukewarm pizza, uncovered food with flies all over it, etc. The drunks from the pool didn't mind, but I stormed away. I was still wearing a wetsuit when I sit down at a table just outside of the regular restaurant - in violation, but they served me. I won't name it as it's been years and I guess they cleaned that up, but ewwwwww.

I still would never return to the Reef Club...! :11:

Driftin' by------hmmm, I guess you can be proud of that "dollop" of mayo, but did you know that mayo ONLY goes bad if it has been refrigerated first and THEN goes to a warm place? I don't know a single local who keeps mayo in the fridge for this reason.....in 20 years MY mayo jars have never seen the inside of a fridge.......hahhaha! I KNOW that Americans think that the minute the jar is opened, it needs to be refrigerated and I KNOW it says that on the label........but, guess what! Not true!...........as for your comment that the way the locals live is "heartbreaking".........well, I guess I'll just stick with the mayo update...........Betsy
