My wife and I will be staying at the Westin Resort in Cancun in mid-January. I would like to ask your help with my questions:

1. Recommendations for a good dive op in the area? I would prefer a smaller operator and not a cattle-car situation.

2. What can I expect to pay for a two-tank dive trip including equipment rental?

3. What are some of the premier dive sites? I'll probably have time to devote two days to diving, so I want to make sure I have an idea of which dive sites to sign up for. I have an OW rating, if that is a consideration in your recommendation.

4. Is a 1-mm full suit sufficient for that time of year?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi rgerman95,

I would check out www.wetset.com. Paul Hensley is the dive master and is an awesome guide, great instructor, and fun guy! He and Jennifer (his wife) run a small operation with a very "personal" touch....no cattle boats! You will dive on reefs, walls, etc, in the Puerto Morelos area (20 miles south of Cancun). No other dive shops operate in that area, so you never see other dive groups.

The water conditions are low 80's so a skin-suit, 1mil or shorty, is no problem. Some people dive with out wet suits, depending on the depth. There are dives ranging from 25 to 125 ft. He does an awesome wreck dive on a coast guard cutter lying at 95 ft.

Paul is from Houston. They retired in Pto Morelos about 10 years ago, and opened the dive shop. He has 3000 plus dives all over the world.

Have fun!

Mark

It's been probably 8 years since I've dove there and am a little uncertain on details. I sold all of gear several years back when my wife and I had triplets and no longer have old dive logs...

Anyway, I dove Cancun as well as Cozumel. I believe we dove Blue Bubble and at the time they were awesome! I think George was our DM We did several reef dives, my favorite was Palancar Bricks. A spiraling cavernous reef starting at about 70 feet and taking you to 120 feet. Super Cool! I just checked and found Blue Bubble as well as a package they offer. They are a smaller outfit, but were eager to please us on our dives. We ended up using them for 3 1/2 days of diving as well as 1 night dive. We looked at Dive Paradise, but they packed the boats and had divers kicking the reefs with too many people. (We generally left 20-30 minutes BEFORE them so we were at sites by the time they got there!) Also, check out the cenotes in Cancun... beautiful!
