Is there a standardised way or dare i say it a DIR way that the waist buckle should sit? ie on the left or the right strap?
I assume it should be opposite to the weight belt buckle, is this correct?

The buckle should be secured to the left waist strap, and positioned so it is to the right of the crotch strap.

Its suppose to be all the way on the right side to hold you belt mounted light canister in place.

Maybe. That will work, but it also makes it a bit more difficult to suit up, as the can light can slip off until you secure the waist strap.

Many people choose to use a second loose waist belt buckle to hold the can light in place. This way it's possible to secure the canister in place before the waist belt buckle is passed thru the crotch strap and secured to the right hand half of the waist strap.

I have a plastic (oh the horror!) waist belt buckle that I use to hold the can light in place.

Some folks do this to retain a can-light.
