speaking of which.

how hard would it be to organize some sort of "diver's voice" on the matter of the spring? I am sure we could get a good number of people behind it just on SB, as well as taking names at the spring on any given weekend

I think that SeaYoda is involved with the meetings and is on the 'list' somehow on what they are doing at the meetings for Morrison. When he and I were there last year (almost 1 year exact to the date) in October, he new one of the county folks (Sheryl somebody) that was organzing the meetings and got put on the "list". So they have been keeping divers in mind, sorta. In reality what they are really wanting to do at Morrison is add a seperate boat ramp so the fishermen don't have to launch from the "beach" and don't get blocked out from the divers parking on the beach area.

While a campground might be neat there..... since they don't have anyone onsite to manage it, it would be a "free for all" and would easily turn into the Vortex campground full of local drunks. I think we're safer w/o the campground there..... (unfortunately).

ok, is there somewhere people can list suggestions?

maybe some sort of listing to show the "board" how many divers, and how diverse are actually using the spring?

maybe some sort of financial prediction as to what a dive shop/concession stand/campground could bring in?

Vortex is supposed to close within the next couple years, leaving Morrison the only wide open spring in the immediate area. Camping facilities and a dive shop/air station would do very well there.

I, too, am concerned about the future of "Vortoberfest"!

Should the spring become unavailable for divers, does anyone have a suggestion as to where we could convene in future years to continue our October dive fest?

Sure... Gulf State Park... Gulf State Park has modern and primitive camping, cottages, marina, trails and fishing. Shore diving nearby includes Perdido Pass & the Whiskey wreck & others; boats are available for charter...

but what about the NO BOOZE rule?

Are alcoholic beverages allowed in the parks?
Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in public areas in all state parks. In some instances when private, fee-based events are scheduled, such as the annual "Pops in the Garden" held at the Alfred B Maclay State Gardens and State Park, alcoholic beverages may be allowed.

We can booze it up at one of the many public beaches(most have pavillions), just no glass :)

I second Gulf State Park :D Far more diving available than St. Andrews or Destin.

If Fort Pickens opens up, that would make a good alternative as well since Pensacola has several beachable dives.

yeah, but you get towed if you try to dive any of it

Nah, only a problem if you ignore the contruction signs at the condos on the beach within Gulf State Park. We can make the hike to dive there. The jetties and the Whiskey have public access parking and I've never had problems with the parking situaitions at the other beach dives in the area.

This would also truly make this a Dixie Diver event :D
