I have heard that the ocean visibility in South Florida (Fort Lauderdale north to Jupiter) can be adversely affected by the release of fresh water from the numerous canals that provide flood control. Ive heard that the volume of water released stirs things up sediment-wise and that the fertilizer in the water flushed into the ocean promotes algae bloom both contributing to decreased viz. This is supposed to be even worse with the dumping of very fertilizer rich water from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie River north of Jupiter.
My questions about this are:
Thanks for any information you can provide.
My questions about this are:
- Does fresh water dumping from the flood control canals really affect the viz?
- How long would the effect last?
- Is there a way of knowing what canals are dumping water on any given day to decide what area to avoid and for how long?
Thanks for any information you can provide.
