yea, I haven't had it either but I wonder if my kids were in public school, would I?.

If your kids were in public school, they would be having a different experience. However, some of the public schools are not as bad as others - given your zip, it wouldn't be so bad - but still a lot different than your kids going to Punahou.

On a slightly different tangent, there exists a bit of prejudice against kids that go to or graduated from Punahou. Funny enough, this prejudice does not necessarily extend itself to other private schools - just Punahou. There's a stereotype that exists - not always unwarranted, but doesn't really apply to the majority of kids that go there. You'll never see any of those school stickers on my car - it makes it a vandalism target. Seriously.

This girl who made the comment I am sure thought that she was funny because of the irony. She is 7th generation from here.

7th generation - that girl is local, through and through. I am positive she made the comment because of the irony.

The term "Haole" is used in different ways. Most of the time it is a descriptive term - Haole = Caucasian. In its negative connotation, Haole can mean race and/or behavior/outlook that is not "local".

catherine96821:
Thats Hawaii, nobody thinks much about it from what I see and everybody seems to get on fine. Cheryl, am I right?

On a general basis I don't think people think about it much and generally people get along fine - at least, in normal circumstances. But that's from my point of view - it's hard for me to put myself into the shoes of Melissa and WC, because I'm from here.

I think people in the military sometimes have a harder time than those who move here on their own.

Sorry about my rant but I haved put up with the racial crap for several years now. It gets real old. Equal rights does not mean special rights.

right or wrong i think you should be able to say whatever you want, this is America of course. Granted this forum is a bit different and there can be something to say about restraint, but still generally you should be able to say whatever you want. Anyways I say Speak Up and if people get mad about what you say, well its entertaining for the rest of us.

We do get to say whatever we want in America or even on this forum. Of course there are certain payments due if you say the "wrong" thing.

Hey Catherine-

I am not going to say how great this place is when I don't feel that way. I can control what my daughter and her friends say around me. When they are out and about as a group then they will reap what they sow, but around me they will show respect and have respect for others. The term haole does not bother me, even though it is a term to distinguish me by COLOR, but when the "f" word comes before it they are using it in a derogatory way and that is racist. I don't call other people names by their color. I will call someone an a@@hole though. My feelings aren't because we are moving. I know lots of people give E. Beach a bad name here, but we have met quite a few "homeless" locals that will talk to you and ask how your day was. We had a guy give us a turtle he made out of shells (very different looking, but I still have it.) I have helped some of them with their carts (getting them down the stairs by the bathroom). Leonardo told me his life history and waves to me when we go out there. The guys at Waimea beach were pointing to the white people- that is how I know it was racially motivated. When someone asks about Hawaii I will give them my opinion. I want them to know it isn't all peaches and cream here. Every place has mean crappy people and here is no different (except you have nowhere to go except a big circle). I hated it in Maryland, but did not have the racial tensions like I do here. So, the diving is great and I can't wait to get back in the water. You and Leesa need to keep posting pictures so I can sit here with my mask on pretending like I am diving (just kidding about the mask part).

:bawling: I have to wait till I get my housings and camera back :(...just no fun with the stylus....

Yea, okay, Melissa, I just want to say that when my daughter was your daughter's age I thought exactly what you do. Take it from me, GF, you are in for a ride....
So, Cheryl, what is the stereotype of Puns? Since you went there, you can say it best.
I have to say, I have been majorly impressed with the kids I know from there....now, having said that, i know they are precocious. But I see them doing community service, studying A LOT, and the thing that I find most unusual is i never here of any of them having falling outs amongst each other. I have them all here every weekend and they seem so supportive of each other. Wish I had had friends like that....

Also, I was very surprised the number of white kids you would assume blew in here from Cali and ....well they were standing around in my kitchen talking about their great grandparents and how they all knew each other, were in business together. I almost fell outta my chair.

Generally . . . the stereotype is of rich, privileged brats. Sure, some fit the bill, but not as a rule. I've often been told that I don't "seem" like I'm an alumnus. When asked to explain - they usually say something along the lines that I'm like a "regular" person. I dunno - whatever that means. Maybe they expected me to turn into a rich, privileged, bratty adult. ;)

Once they start telling you at the end of every school year what your ranking is within your class (based on your GPA), it gets pretty competitive - especially once everyone starts comparing their rank.

Not if it falls outside the rules outlined in the Terms of Service. I believe racist statements would be outside the TOS.

Heck, I can't make the political comments that I would like to on this board. Even some of the sexual ones are forbidden. But then I'm really here to talk diving.

i am waiting with my mask on- where's the pictures Catherine and Leesa?

Again, you can say anything you want, anywhere, this is America.

But you might just pay a price. Walk into a bar filled with Black men and use the N word. You have the right to say it don't you?

But you'll pay.
