In addition to what's already been mentioned:

Bring a mat to put behing your car, it helps keep sand out of the car.

Bring jugs of water to rinse sand off boots, feet, gear. This is even more important than the mat.

Bring a fine mesh bag into which you'll put your plunder. If you don't have one, a sock will do in a pinch.

Bring a shoe string so you can put your car door key around your neck while you're underwater (rinse it with the fresh water before putting it in the lock). If you have keyless entry, you can skip the shoe string.

If you want to collect anything fragile you might find (sand dollars, crab carapices, urchin skeletons), bring some plastic containers with lids (nothing fancy - cottage cheese, sour cream - that type of container).

I normally bring the other items also but how fine a mesh bag? I have a few choices already, one my do.

the finer the better (some of the teeth are quite small)...if you have several bags, bring them all and ask someone when your there

If the mesh is like the screen in your windows, it's perfect. Dive shops in Venice and Port Charlotte carry them, those in Fort Myers do not. I don't know about Sarasota shops.
