Is this thread about scuba diving safety or is it about a political concept regarding personal responsibility. An experienced diver might have noticed someting was amiss, or they might not have. I think the law is clear. If a defective product causes injury, the manufacturer is responsible.

Checking computer programs against one another? How far to check and so forth. Carry a backup computer or a backup to the backup or a backup to the backup of the backup?

How far to go, how type A, how anal retentive? Dive with a pony bottle? On baby dives with a buddy? What else?

Park your car, you might get wacked driving to Walmart.

I derive all my profiles from a set of air tables. Computers are not all that safe. My suunto malfunctioned twice.

Here is a nice picture, it's me, sitting in my car, holding my stinger. Note the depth it displays.

1) How do you deal with multi level dives on air tables? I use my computer because between my tables and my computer there's a lot of bottom time I'd miss out on exploring in the local lake or river.

2) I'm not familiar with the Suunto interface. Which number is the depth?

All this being said, the bug in question is another great reason to avoid computers.

I really, really want to be able to.

It's 24 hours for me no matter what the computer thinks.

I'm the same way. I never liked the fact that the UWATECs even displayed the "Time To Fly" info. I think it is sort of tempting people to ignore the "24 Hour" rule so they can get in the maximum amount of dives on vacation.

Computers have their place in diving but, most people tend to rely on them way to much. Who cares what the computer says, use common sense. The algorithums used by computers are very general and will not work for everyone.

1) I average it out. It's a pretty simple, but I'd rather not give what could be construed as a deco lesson over the internet. A little knowledge can be dangerous. Simple averaging does NOT work.

I would however encourage everyone to look at their profiles, look at how much deco they needed, look at the depths, and see if a pattern emerges. None of this stuff is rocket science, and rules of thumb tend to be plenty accurate. I'm usually out before my computer says I'm ready (which is why I keep it in gauge mode).

2) It's the number at the top, the one that reads 105 fsw.

Where does one learn this besides DIRF?

(this is for non-deco rec stuff)

Uuuuh, Tech 1? ;-)

Seriously, I don't know. I guess you could pick up a lot of stuff by looking at the quest and techdiver archives? Why not take DIRF? There are some really nice people teaching it.

Because I don't think I'm good enough yet to get the most out of the class, and I can't afford to waste the money.

Do they teach this in DIRF? It never seems to be mentioned in the DIRF class reports, the GUE website says nothing at all about it, but a lot of DIR guys say to take DIRF for it.

Why the shadiness?
