My friend landed a gig opening a new hotel in Utila. I would love to go visit her. Can anyone comment on the area, the easiest air from Miami or San Juan (I live in Bonaire) please? Any comments on Utila are most welcome.

Well I don't know how to get you to Utila from Bonaire but please let me know if I can house sit for you when you do go! I'll try to find the time to schlep down there!

I don't know what airlines fly out of bonaire, but can you fly through panama? If so, get to Panama and take Copa to Tegus. Copa is a subsidiary of Continental and a very nice airline. Then you'll fly Sosa or Atlantic to Utila.

I have no clue how to get Panama aside from Caracas which I seek to avoid. I see it's far easier to go AA to SAP via MIA or CO to La Ceida from Newark if I combined a trip to Boston and then to Utila. It sounds like there are lots of ways to get to Utila on puddle jumpers and it's about 3-4 stops. I am queasy thinking about it.

Utila is a tiny little island with lots of young folks. It's a blast. I lived there for 4 months and loved every minute though I was probably the oldest person on the island. You can walk most of the developed part of the island except for one resort which is across a swamp from the rest of the dive shops, restaurants and bars. The island is very safe and I frequently walked around late at night and never had a problem other than an occasionaly drunk.
Take some immodium or something similar with you. Nearly all visitors get sick within a few days. Sanitation isn't a strong point on the island. Most places for instance ask you to put TP in a waste basket instead of in the toilet.
Food is an cheap or expensive as your tastes. You could spend $3 for each meal and probably up to $20 at a couple of places. The Mango Inn has great pizza at the restaurant.
The diving is easy and fun. There are 8 or 10 dive operations on the island. The wreck is fun to visit as is Black Hills. This place is very competitive and has the cheapest diving of any I've ever seen.
You mention a new hotel so I'm guessing it's the resort that is away from all the others. I'm not sure how you get to the developed area from there. You certainly can take a boat but I also think you can get a water taxi almost anytime. You'll definately want to see the developed area. It's probably a total of 2 miles long so you can easily walk it.

Maybe since you don't like the "puddle jumpers" you can make your way to Roatan on bigger jets and then take a Catamaran ride to Utila.
