Upgrading the Scuba Pro Multi-Tool
Many posters here ask if the Scubapro Multi-Tool from Scuba Tools Scubapro Multi-Tool, Aluminum is a worthwhile tool to own. The answer is yes for occasional use, but if you’re going to work on a number of regulators, you’re better off getting the purpose built hook spanners. Hook Spanner Set, #3 thru #6 The reason is that the pins in the cap/body removal section of the Multi-Tool are simply roll pins, aka spring pins. While they do work for occasional use, roll pins are not very durable. If you find yourself rebuilding eBay jewels that have their fair share of corrosion, you’ll find the roll pins lacking. So what to do if you already have a Multi-Tool or want to buy one? Well, there is an easy modification that allows you to upgrade the tool to a solid pin design just like the hook pin spanner. Simply drive out the roll pins, tap the holes (thankfully they are already the right diameter) with a ¼-20 tap McMaster-Carr and install replacement pins also available from Scuba Tools. The best fitting pin is the .240 diameter pin. For a $1.90 each, get a few of them. Replaceable Pin (.240 dia.) for Hook Spanner
I suppose the seat retainer pins could be replaced by solid pins too; but I have not bothered as they don’t generally see the stress the body/cap pins do.
