Plus 1 for Dive Choice Mexico...small op with great people. We've used the for Coz diving and cenote diving on the mainland. Karen and Ricardo can work with you.

My wife wouldn't wait till I was asleep.......heck I may not even get the "without you" out of my mouth...... :)

I've made many a solo trip to Cozumel, and whenever I have, I've stayed in town (usually at a cheap hotel - the Costa Maya Cozumel, until it closed, or one of the real cheap places, like Hotel Flamingo), and dove with Aldora. I never had a problem as a solo there - downtown pier, check in my gear at the Office on Calle Cinco Sur, bout 1/2 block back from Melgar. I understand Aldora is more expensive than some other ops, but I really like: (1) Everyone dives computers, so longer bottom time; (2) Steel HP 120 tanksso I never worry about sucking air & forcing the group up early, even if I haven't been diving in a while: (3) small fast boats, small groups; (4) long surface interval on the beach - better outgassing, longer second dive; (5) excellent divemasters. I usually go cheap on hotel (I'm only going to sleep there!) & spend my money on diving & dining.

Another vote for Blue Magic. I've known some of the folks there for years when they were with another shop.

As for solo diving, I think you're going to have a problem with that. Your best shot is to hook up with one of the shops that cater to an advanced diving crowd and you'll probably find other people at your level who also do most of their diving solo. Pairing up with someone like that isn't bad at all.

I like Blue XTSea.

Photography is not all that difficult despite the currents. On Paradise reef we were able to stop and shoot without issue. On a couple of the dives one had to do drive by shooting, but the fish were often drifting at the same speed we were. I was able to shoot without issue on every dive. The DM was very good about setting a nice pace that allowed us time to shoot. We had a great group of experienced divers which helped. Kudos to Cristy for getting our dive group together, we meshed really well and that is not always easy.

The first reply nailed it, it depends on where you're staying.

I was just there and dove with Opal's Dream and enjoyed the diving, their DMs, and their hospitality a lot. That being said, I did not like spending $15/day on taxis to get to the boat. I like staying in town because I like to experience the town of San Miguel and all the restaurants and culture it has to offer and I will probably look for an operator that can pick me up near my hotel when I visit next time.

That's like me, I love being in town, the restaurants and the culture are as important to me as the diving, that's why I love it there so much. Blue XTSea works great for me for diving; small boats, great people, and pick up at the Aldora pier in town. 3 weeks and counting until I am back :-)

+1 for Blue XTSea

First met Basscat on one of Christi's boats.

Have a great trip Chris!
