Quick question guys, As a new diver (15 dives), I have never experienced "being sick" to the point of vomiting underwater. During my training, my instructor said that if the urge arises, expel through your primary regulator. Which in some regard makes sense because you certainly don't want to remove your air supply from your mouth knowing that you most likely will have the urge to inhale between urges so to speak. It doesn't make sense to me though to chance "clogging up " a perfectly good regulator.
I should have asked in class, but didn't. Why wouldn't a person, if though feel the urge to expel, grad their safe second "octo" and use that instead of their primary breathing device?
Any advice will be appreciated. bob

yeah, if you have time, go for the octo

just don't get caught in mid-exchange, since your reflex to inhale after you
hurl will leave you swallowing saltwater

by the way, if you have to hurl, hang on to the regulator and hold it
firmly against your mouth so you don't lose it in mid-heave (as it were)
it's ok to rinse afterwards, of course

and yes, it can be done, as i am 100% sure of

Vomitting through the octopus is usually better, if you have enough time to do the switch safely.

However, as this happened to me last weekend on my rebreather (twice), I can also suggest a really gros, but effective solution: swallow :11: , its really unpleasant, but better than having it in the loop and having to deal with it for the remainder for the dive.

Just some of the things we have to put up with to enjoy our passion :scubadive

I am just getting ready to start dive classes and read this post. Does throwing up under water happen to almost everyone?

I've never had it happen to me but my wife has had this problem...come up. She just swishes her regulator and keeps on diving. If she didn't tell me I would have never known. I bet it is fairly common...lots of people throw up because of 'nerves'.

I threw up on my first 18m dive for certification...combination of nerves and sea sickness, sitting on the boat waiting for slack water. Just let it all come out the reg and then purge the reg. No big deal, only a bit gross.
