I'm scheduled to be in an underwater pumpkin carving contest tomorrow, sponsored by my LDS at Tyler State Park. My team of 4 are all grandmothers, so we're the Team Who'sYourGranny! We've been talking trash and now we have to back it up. So here's my problem:

What in the heck do you do at an underwater pumpkin carving contest!? :11: I think we have to lay out a tarp, and clean up all the pumpkin guts with a trashbag, and then carve our pumpkin, 30 min time limit. Any hints, ideas or kick-butt design ideas would be much appreciated. If anyone has experience, I'd love to hear from you, and asap! Thank you,

Foo

Hey Foo! How fun for you guys!

Although I've never actually tried this, I would say (1) overweight yourself so you won't be bobbing up and down off the bottom making it hard to see, (2) maybe you can use an underwater writing utensil of some sort to draw your design before cutting, and (3) maybe you could do something that represents your team name. Just some thoughts. I'm sure you will have a good time anyway.

Rick says to watch your fingers - and hoses!!

You have to clean and gut your pumpkin on the surface first. Bring a mesh bag with you to stuff the pieces of the pumpkin in that you cut out when you are in the water. Put about a 2 pound weight in the pumpkin so it doesn't float up real easy. Get a SHARP knife to carve. I did a pumpkin with a regulator and mask one year and one a prize with that design. Then when I got to the surface I put a beanie on it. It was cute. Good luck!

How bout some pics showing how they turned out. Sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

We didn't make it to the contest after all- we imbibed in an extremely undisciplined way at the costume party that we attended Sat. night, and were in no shape to dive yesterday. But a great time was had by all who attended, and I will see if I can either posts photos or a link asap. Thanks for all the hints, I'll hang onto those ideas for next year!

Those were great! Looked like fun for sure.

The cat pumpkin was especially cool!

Wow....I was expecting typical toothy grins and squinty eyes. Those are great!

Sounds like something fun to try to organize next year at CSSP or somewhere near the Dallas area. Too bad Foo that you didn't get to participate. We were looking forward to the Granny carving!
