this thread in detail but I do think that holdingmybreath has a good point about learning that you can do without taking a breath for more time then most of us realize.

...we practice OOA exercises with 40' separations.

It is a good thing to know that you don't die immediately as soon as you are OOA or take the regulator out of your mouth.

I can see where apnea training could help divers understand this and thus be less prone to panic.

Most folks will take a reflexive full breath before giving up their regulator and this makes them positive while the OOA is probably breathing out and getting negative. This sets up a scenario where the donor is heading up and the donee is sinking... not good!

Knowing that you can last for quite a while on a partial breath is important too in breaking the habit of taking a big breath before handing off the reg.
