A friend of mine invented a magnifying glass for underwater, back in 2000. Recently he created a new model which is larger. Basically it offers a larger field of view which makes it excellent for searching. It also offers a small insert with 4x magnification.
In our diving club we have a lot of people interested in underwater biology, and the magnifying glass is a great enhancement in viewing small bugs 'n' critters.
Normal magnifying glasses don't work underwater, because of the refractive indices of water and glass are almost equal: they loose their power.
More info on his site.
