There's a big part of the country that's quite land-locked. Not everyone is fortunate enough to live near the ocean.

My opinion is they should just abandon the middle part of the country, and just keep it around for camping trips, but that's a whole different discussion.

(And actually, I've heard some of those quarries have some pretty cool dives to offer, although I, too, find it hard to contemplate how interesting a dive without a reef and a ton of varied underwater life could be.)

suggestions to amuse students - take a elcheapo camera and take photos of them... get them to take photos of eachother!!

They can actually be quite entertaining. Dutch Springs, the 1 I use the most, has a lot of sunken attractions there to give you something to do. We have a helicopter, 2 airplanes, umpteen million boats, a school bus crane couple of cars vans and such. Also plenty of freshwater fish, largemouth bass, trout, blue gills, carp koi and so on and so on. The Bass tend to act like puppy dogs if you run along the ridge at 15 ft (for a safety stop) turning over rocks, finding crayfish, they tend to do a little dance foe this tasty morsal.

The Madison, AL quarry has a Titan missle sticking up in the middle and space junk to explore. And it's warm in the summer.

It will get up to the 70's during the summer but if you go deeper it can be a little brisk.

The quarry closed last year due to bankruptcy of the owners, but it is being reopened this summer. Check the Dixie Divers forum and you'll find all the info. 53 feet is the deepest I've been able to find in that quarry. Most of it is 35-45 feet deep and in the mid 70s top to bottom. There is part of a space shuttle mock-up down there too.

The first part of this is likely to get you fired (at least if you were my divemaster working with my students) and then also sued...

w/e ever man.. i had my air turned off many times under water regardless in the pool or not. it's good for the kids to learn what to do and how to think fast without panicing...
