Just finished packing all my gear and clothes and camera and the other crap. All came in under weight for american airlines but from Curacao to Bonaire im on Dutch Antilles Express they limit me to a 20kg and one carry on. I've got close to 30kg of stuff. Does anyone know how much they enforce the baggage allowances?

DAE. My experience is that you will have to pay for the overweight luggage. We went to Bonaire last year. Our luggage went astray on the way down - no charge. Even though my wife bought some stuff while we were there it was not much in the way of weight. On the departure from Bonaire we had to go to the DAE office and pay extra for being overweight.

I don't know if others had a similar experience with DAE regarding tickets and this is a bit off topic. We had a fax of our reservation that indicated it was valid for travel. They did not issue what one could call a ticket and it was not an electronic receipt. Part of the fax was a copy of our credit card payment slip. We travelled through Aruba and had to go to the DAE office to get our tickets validated. It took a bit of time while I had a rather animated conversation with the agent who told me that we did not have tickets for the flight. I was warned about this by one of our friends who had travelled the same route a number of times. Forewarned is forearmed. Hold your ground and make sure you have proof of payment. It may be different in Curacao than Aruba.

DAE was very precise & methodical on our Thanksgiving 2006 trip. It was US$51 for the CUR-BON leg, then US$60 for the BON-CUR-SXM leg after we'd added some items we purchased on Bonaire.

We got old-fashioned paper tickets (which also have receipts) for our T'giving 2006 trip, and again for our March 2007 trip to Curacao (DAE for AUA-CUR and back - could only get to Aruba on our Continental FF miles). I highly recommend this with DAE - we had zero problems. Any travel agent with access to the Hahn Air system should be able to do that for you. Here's who we used - bought DAE tickets over the phone on a Monday, they arrived in the mail by either Wednesday or Thursday that same week.

I've found this to be a way to help minimize hassle with smaller, local airines like DAE, the old Bonaire Excel, Air Tahiti's island-hoppers, WinAir that island-hops the other members of the Netherlands Antilles, etc. But, be advised, there may be a service charge for issuing paper tickets - I consider those to be hassle mitigation insurance though not everyone would necessarily take the same perspective. Ours were $25 per person for each trip - for all paper tickets on all little carriers per trip, not per airline, on our last trip and our upcoming trip.

We had to pay $2 per kilo over 20K from Bonaire to Curacao in January.

for different journies with DAE the tariff from their site is

Every kilo above 20 kilos will be charged as follows:
$2 per kilo between BON/AUA-CUR and AUA-BON
$3 per kilo between CUR-VLN
$4 per kilo between AUA/BON-VLN
$6 per kilo between CUR/AUA/BON-SXM
$8 per kilo between SXM-VLN

Just another vote for they will enforce the limits and you will have to pay unless you get very lucky.

Thanks for the update - looks like we'd pay a LOT more now for the BON-CUR-SXM jaunt we took last December! And, I'll have a decent idea of what the AUA-CUR and return fees will be.

Make sure you don't go over 20 Kg (44 lb.) in one bag. You can carry on 10Kg additional. Then you have to pay $2 (or more - as stated in the chart) per kilo (this adds up quickly). So its really $2/kilo over 30...and yes, they do enforce the limits (it's extra money for them, so why not?). If the counter is "slow" (as in no one is around) you can try to slip the guy $10-$20...that worked for me once and I saved about another $20 in charges...

DAE strictly enforce the weight limits and will make you pay for the overage in CASH. They will not take credit cards or travelers checks.

I would suggest putting small overages into your carry-on. DAE did not weigh our carry-ons in either direction.

Hint...Hint....

If you can put the extra weight in your carry on. They don't weigh your carryon, so this could help.

I'll be coming in LAX-AUA-CUR-BON-AUA-LAX. Is there a bag limit? I'm planning on having one suitcase, one dive bag and a carry-on. Is there a size limit or baggage limit (besides weight) on the interisland flights? Ok, ok, I could probably look it up on the interisland websites bit I'm not sure which one I'll be flying and I like the additional info I fet from fellow SBers.:D
