I dove a setup very similar to what you are looking at for a while. A safe second (Zeagle Octo-Z), air integrated dive comp with no backup gauge, etc. I have since changed to a long hose, bunggied octo with a small spg, all on miflex hoses which I find to be even more streamlined. I now dive with a Uemis but still use the small spg and am glad to have it as a backup.
That said, I did dive without a backup spg for a while and felt comfortable. I never had a transmitter link issue for more than a few seconds at a time here and there and if I did, I would have a good idea of what my last pressure was and what my air consumption is to know I could make it to the surface with a safe stop. Of course that ends your dive, but the chances of that happening are quite slim, in my experience at least.
On a side note, as the D9 is super popular (esp in Asian waters) I have seen many transmitters get confused when diving with other D9's because of the way the transmitter and wrist unit are paired and that two units can share the same transmitter code.
