In pretty much every case of a home user having a virus I have run across, when I ask them if they have current AV they give a dumb stare or say, "Norton keeps prompting me to sign up, but it wants money!"
98% of the virus/trojan bots were aimed at windows in the past, many today are also aimed at application software such as Adobe or Firefox browsers, etc. so it is not just the OS.
95% of the virus/trojan infections can be prevented without any AV at all if the user is not running as admin, like Linux does by default.
In a directed attack, the nightmare is a hacker getting hold of a Linux box not properly hardened. You will never know it.
