That is real easy, just tell Steve you are getting cold and he will accomodate you. We tell our students all the time to prepare for 2 hours in the water, but if they don't make it, they don't make it and we adjust. It isn't that big of a deal, and besides I know Steve real well he's a warm water wussy and he won't last 2 hours in the PNW without warming up ;-)
In all candor it's better to tell students that we may be in the water for up to 2 hours and have them prepared, then be silent on the issue and have your students ill-prepared if the opportunity presents itself. Trust me, we've taught many classes in Alaska during winter and no one was staying in the water for 2 hours ;-)
