I am looking at buying a pair off tanks with twin din valves and was wondering if anyone could give me some information on them. I understand the benefit of the twin valves for ice diving etc, where there may be a need to have an independent back up regulator setup. However, can they be used with just a single first stage when diving with them or must you have two regulator set ups attached to them?

You can use an H valve with one reg but why? Using only one first stage means you allow water into the threads and sealing face of the other valve. Freshwater may be ok but if used in salt you are going to risk corrosion for no good reason. Without the other reg you are adding to the possibility of something failing needlessly. If you are not going to use it as intended don't bother with it.

And BTW I would not rely on those DIN plugs to keep water out. Not the one in the picture anyway.

But what you can also do is buy the plugs that go into the ends of the valves where the other valve is screwed in. Or buy the tanks and trade the valves for std DIN valves if you like. Just means you need to ID the valve maker and proper size to do the former. The latter could be done quite easily and painlessly. Heck I'd even be interested in the h valves.

When fully inserted and have air against them they seal.

As for the cylinders. Can you get a better picture of the markings? I am going to say the valves are 7/8" - 14 UNF which means the cylinders are 3500psi cylinders. Finding single valves (which will only be in DIN no yoke) may be hard to find. The valves on there look like to the old Sherwood/Genesis angled valve. That said you can take the H valve off and insert a plug.
 
Actually I wasn't. I meant the plugs you insert when you take the other valve off. The others would not be my choice as you kinda need to pressurize them to seal and then getting them out requires a big ass wrench and I would think doing that repeatedly would be unnecessary stress on the threads.

The threads of the DIN connection are always exposed to the water condition, they are not on the sealed side. I know, mine are due for some TLC.

Where they are modular valves I particularly like the idea of simplifying the valves if you decline to make the rig redundant.

I would not want to dive them as open ports for fear of the valve accidentally getting cracked open.
