This is never good for tourism.....

Saw that this morning. Not going to lie, if this leads to less tourism it may be good for the area. Too many people are swarming to the area and worsening the pollution issues and is leading to more and more all inclusives being built.

I know of several single American women in their 20s and 30s who live in Tulum for the diving. They swear it’s safe, but I think they’re crazy.

Don't you live in Chicago? Do you consider it safe? If you do, that is probably the same way that those who live in Tulum can still consider it safe.

Detroit, Chicago, here in Atlanta ... it's all the same news.

In Tulum in 2004 I slept on the beach in a thatched-roof hut for a few bucks a night and walked to and from town, including in the evening, and there wasn't a sidewalk/bike path then. I was in Tulum a couple of years ago and that was all replaced by real hotels. I didn't experience any crime, but I got the worst ear infection of my life from diving in the cenotes. And what will that idiotic Maya Train thing do the region? Grumble grumble.

Going back in January!

In Chicago, the crime has spilled over into the Mag Mile - Michigan Avenue, the prime shopping district downtown. Shootings. Tourists getting mugged, lots more than used to happen. Wandering gangs of ne’er-do-wells from the south and/or west sides that attack tourists and visitors from the burbs. Car jackings are WAY up in the city. The nice neighborhoods in the city have seen their crime rates going up and you never know what’s going to happen now.

I live way out in the burbs. I got out of the city back in 2008. I lived on the northwest side, far from the bad areas back then. Anyone who intentionally chooses to live in the city now needs to have their head examined. If I’m even driving through on the freeway, I’m armed. Like that does much good. There were three separate freeway shootings yesterday alone.

There is cave diving in Chicago?

Don't they have a subway system? If so turn off the pumps for a couple of years and you will have cave diving in Chicago.

Anyways it is unfortunate that the Mexican government is letting this happened, but I guarantee you that the response will be swift. They don't want what happened to other tourist areas to happen to RM.

Personally I just stay in a nicer area of PDC near the ferry, drive down to ZG, and then onto whatever cave we are diving that day. I can walk, drive, or order delivery from dozens of places to eat at.

Though if you are worried about security you can stay at XOC-Ha, they are in a small community gated community with a guard just outside of Akumal. It is so secluded that you will miss it unless you are actively looking for the tiny sign. As long as you can stand Vegan food for a week, you can ask for dinner only leaving the property for cave diving, spending the rest of the time relaxing by the pool. Heck even if you aren't worried about security, it is a really nice experience there, and the food is pretty good.

It seems random violence is up everywhere these days. I won't even drive in Houston at night anymore after almost getting into three accidents in one night (tailgating/road rage/street racing). Murder rate is up 35% from last year and up 73% from 2019! On the plus (?) side everyone can now carry concealed with no training whatsoever.

But an increase in open cartel crime is a different story altogether. It'll suck big time if QR turns into Tamaulipas or Nuevo Leon. It's not just random gun violence or drug deals gone wrong at that point. It's cartel ownership of the entire legal system from the cops on the street to the federal judges.

Anyone dove Zatacon lately?
