Looking up through the sunlight and the giant kelp reminded me forcefully of hiking in the Redwoods...

Lynne:

Laura and dived Ship Rock, Arrow Cove and Eagle Reef from aboard the Magician, today. I said exactly the same thing about the kelp forest at Arrow Cove. I absolutely LOVE diving there and swimming through the bottom of the kelp.

Here's a shot to remind you and Peter...

You know, I think one of the most wonderful things about travelling and diving is the wonderful newness of everything you see. And one of the most fabulous things about hosting travelling divers is that they bring that newness back for the local divers to enjoy, as well.

I got discouraged at one point during the trip, because I want so much to host Claudette and Ken here in Seattle, but I simply can't offer the stunning visibility or the clear water colors, or the giant kelp. But Claudette pointed out to me that what we have, that we take for granted, will be new and wonderful to her. Alabaster nudibranchs -- Yeah! Ratfish -- Hooray! Big ling cod -- Wow! We look past those things, for the unusual and remarkable, but the visitor sees them for the first time, and reminds us that they are memorable in their own right.

Thanks for the photo, Ian. I will yearn each time I see SoCalers posting about going back to Casino Point, or Anacapa, or when I read one of Ken or Claudette's reports of diving the oil rigs (which I am sure I will read, and probably in the not too distant future.)

Dude I'm not going to take that bet....

She has a lot more letters behind her name... All I have is Jr... :11doh:

Just elbowin' you, Lynne. :)
(I know I had to pull out the thesaurus for one of those...:54:)

Looking up through the sunlight and the giant kelp reminded me forcefully of hiking in the Redwoods, except the Redwoods don't have brilliant orange birds flitting about . . . Bill, Catalina exceeded all my expectations. After the fabulous dives we had had at Anacapa and the oil rigs, I thought Catalina would be a letdown, especially when I saw how tiny the dive park is, and how many divers we would be sharing it with. I was completely wrong. I can see how you can live there and dive there over and over again.

We WILL be back. There's no doubt in the mind of either of us about that. If nothing else would bring us back, just getting a chance to spend more time with the wonderful people would do it.
The kelp forest for me is a magical place, and I've loved every one of my dives at Catalina. ( hope that you got to experience the thrill of being followed around by one of our GSB!)
I'm so glad that you guys had a wonderful time :)

Quite right, Lynne. I remember my first trip out to Catalina with Ken as my most gracious tour guide a few years ago, and still, I make it a point to get out there when I am in the area. Each time it's as wondrous as the first time I dove there.

I see Ken was having fun with the citrus fruit when you were there, too!
