I'm reminded of the opening scene in Macbeth: witches gathered around a container filled with Liquids and Gels, "cauldron boil and cauldron bubble", clouds of gas filling the cabins, while the flight crew heroically struggles to unlock the security door and rescue the passengers. I wonder if eye of newt is on the proscribed list. I hope our protectors are paying attention to warnings from Hollywood about the horrific consequences of snakes on a plane.

Mixing gels and liquids to produce deadly gasses is not necessary. There are more devious methods. Many years ago several of us had the misfortune to occupy a small semi-enclosed pit with a Cajun who had been snacking on deviled eggs and smoked eel. About an hour later, and despite some very real hazards, we evacuated that temporary dwelling with blind, careless haste, our concerns for security and safety overcome by the noxious miasma issuing from our Louisiana colleague.
I hope this account does not give the wrong people ideas, and compromise national security.

Anyway, my belief, change from the old school government bureaucracy and let the airlines hire their own security.

The FEMA fellow had no clue about that position going in. That is why he failed miserably, IMHO. A "pet" position, if you will, caught.

Where did Catherine go anyway... :lurk:

Maybe Catherine has been detained by the FBI for starting an Internet thread referring to terrorism, TSA, airlines, bombs, and privatization of security. :confused:

At one time I had 800 private security agents working for me and I was more worried about spot inspections by our insurance underwriters than any corporate policy or legalities.

That didn't work well either. That's how it was before. When the airlines control the security, it would become more of an issue for them to spend more money, which they won't do (no meals, no service, etc) or to greatly increase the price of an airline ticket to cover the added expense of being responsible for security. I don't think people want to pay more for airline tickets. Personally, I think it should be the government's responsibility to protect our vital assets (airports). Many countries throughout the world have been doing this for years and years. The only reason (IMO) that it didn't happen here sooner, is because it sounds an awful lot like socialism - which is a bad word in this country.

(hope I'm not crossing the TOS line) :D

There would have been no reconstruction of the airframe if it went down in 12000 feet of water and we wouldn't have known what questions to ask of KSM.

But in the cases that you're talking about we do have information on the flight and what took it down, and we do have a reconstructed airframe of flight 800, and neither KSM or any other terrorist has ever taken responsibility for them.

Why did the center fuel tank blow up? You do remember that convicted terrorist Ramzi Yousef, planner of the 1993 WTC bombing, had previously designed a plan to blow up the center fuel tank of a 747. In fact, it was attempted with Flight 434.

Also remember that the FBI detected plastic explosives residue in the debris but it was explained away as due to a security exercise conducted a few weeks earlier.

The center fuel tank on flight 800 blew up because a spark ignited fuel vapor. There is no evidence of an explosion in the passenger or baggage compartment which detonated the center fuel tank. If there had been such an explosion there would have been evidence of it in the recovered airframe beyond the trace of PETN.

What caused the spark? Accidental or deliberate? Short circuit or sabotage?

With all due respect, what KSM or other captured terrorists have told us during interrogations is not a matter of public record.
