That sounds like a good idea. We should get that set up soon. I have a little vacation time to burn.

Sweet Pictures. Haven't been out to the Sheridan yet. Still trying to get my non-diver brother out to take me. Haha.

I was working nights in the Emergency Room at MacDill Air Force Base on January 28, 1980. We received many of the survivors and somewhere I have some insignia from crewmembers who were admitted to the hospital. It was a very long and emotional night for all. I remember that a brightly lighted passenger ship prevented the Capricorn and the Blackthorn from seeing each other until it was too late. Some of the crew said that the collision would have been recoverable except the Capricorn's anchor caught in the Blackthorn's port side and flipped her over.

I would really like to dive the wreck someday. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Wow that is an interesting story. I can't believe you haven't dove her yet. She is located right next to the Sheridan and another wreck in the area.

The Blackthorn was a USCG bouy tender. She was outbound from Tampa, just coming out of a major refit. The damage from the collision was so bad she was declared a total loss. Twenty-two crewman lost their lives when the Blackthorn capsized, including one sailor who stayed inside to help other crewman escape.

There's a monument to those lost in the collision at the north end of the Skyway Bridge. It's in the rest area on the west side.
Stop and check it out some time...:salute:
