We were planning a trip to Sipadan and had nearly everything lined up and ready to book last night (resort, flights, etc) until we looked at trip insurance and discovered that our normal trip insurance provider, health insurance, and life insurance wouldn't cover us. While we've dealt with the need to get supplemental health insurance for diving before, it's the fact that our normal trip insurance and life insurance won't cover us that is much more difficult. Primarily this stems from the fact that most western countries have advisories against travel to eastern Sabah and the outlying islands. Australia says to "Reconsider your need to travel", Canada advises against non-essential travel, New Zealand says "we advise against all tourist and other non-essential travel to these areas" and also highlights the 1900-0500 curfew in the area, the UK advises against all but essential travel, and while the US doesn't have an official travel advisory or warning they say "do U.S. citizens are advised against travel to coastal resorts and outlying islands in Eastern Sabah from Kudat to Tawau as well as resorts along the Kinabatangan River" (quotes current as of Friday, March 20, 2015).
Has anyone had luck getting insurance to cover a trip to this area? We're based out of the US as that will likely have an impact. I have to confess, I find this whole thing odd as our insurance had no problem with us flying into San Pedro Sula and traveling overland the La Ceiba and Cayos Cochinos, despite the presence of a travel warning for Honduras.
