:jetfighte :doctor: I just purchased a new Vytec computer (air integrated) and plan a trip to Hawaii in a couple of weeks. With my old computer, I was told not to put it in my luggage because of the pressure changes in flight. I can carry the Vytec wrist unit with me on board the plane, but the transmitter unit is attached to the Octopus. Do I need to be concerned about this?

Welcome to the Board.

When I got mine, I carried it on and learned to use it in the plane! No worries...its been great ever since. You'll love it.

I don't know that I would be worried so much about the pressure change than actually losing it - which is why I always carry mine in my carry-on.

From what others have told me the pressue in the luggage compartment is the same as cabin pressure. Not sure if this is the same on all planes or not. Not an issue for me as all my gear is in a carryon anyway.

Best to carry-on your entire regulator anyway. This is life support equipment and there is no telling what the security goons will do while checking it out in your checked luggage. They WILL open and check your luggage. If you carry it on you will be there when they check it out and you can ask them to be gentle with it since it is life support equipment.

Absolutely! Your transmitter should be connected to your first stage, or you will have a very very short dive. LOL

Certainly in jet airliners and turbo prop commuters the hold is pressurised to the same as the cabin (roughly 8000ft msl) AND is heated.

The rumours about unpressurised, unheated holds probably started in the very old days of air travel and even then probably werent accurate !

Id go with what others say though - id be more worried about some baggage handle trained chimp jumping up and down on the case and breaking the computer or losing the bag. Make sure its insured.

The ideal solution would be to carry delicate/expensive stuff in hand luggage but these days here you get 5kg hand luggage, 1 bag limit and nothing that they think could be used as a weapon. I know of someone that wasnt allowed to carry regs. in the baggage as they could be a weapon (no ive got no idea either). Weight and security constraints means my dive gear ends up travelling in the hold and im ALWAYS paranoid at luggage reclaim until i see my case come round.

Do you know what the difference is between normal luggage and that marked fragile. Simple they throw the fragile stuff underhand.

That's part of the reason for taking your regs and mask with you on board. The second one is what happens if your luggage gets lost or delayed. At least you have regs, instruments and a mask you are comfortable with. I managed to get everything but my dive tool into a roll-a-board so that I can take it with me. Funny part is the fins are the hardest part, but my new splits are flexible enough and just short enough to fit. That way I have fins, mask, BC, and regs in carry on.

Clothes can be replaced much easier than gear I know and trust. I dove with rental gear once, and that will be the last time it happens.

I'm confused. How is it possible to get all dive gear in a 22X14X9
bag? I could not get my BCD alone in one. And yes, I did deflate. I'm going to carry on my reg, computer and mask. the rest will be checked in. Pray for me. Going to the Caymans Sat.
