Travel Luggage Bags on Dive Boats? Are You Crazy?

I have seen divers show up at the dock rolling this huge travel bag with all thier gear in it that just takes up too much space on the boat and wonder if they have ever been told that is not the right thing to do? I can't help but be amazed that these people have not been told a few times before, GET A MESH DIVE BAG! These travel bags are so big they will not fit under the seat and have to stay out in the aisle, which blocks everyone else. I find this very selfish.

Should the boat Capt, divers, or DM tell them what is appropriate? Is it in fact acceptable?

Yes they should. LDS sell the new guys those cool roll around bags with room for everything, except other people on the boat. It should be pointed out to them that there just is not room on boats for those kind of bags.

I was mellow till I saw this silly man rolling this huge steamer trunk like thing down the ramp on the dock to the boat. I thought to myself, please Neputune, let him be on another boat. The Sea Gods were good to me that day, he went on another boat. I glanced at the other divers watching this huge bag put on thier boat, thier eyes were rolling. Capt of the boat said nothing.

When folks are looking at the big Akona bag in the shop, the shop owner points out that it is good for traveling with, just not diving with. For that, they only need a mesh type duffle bag that conveniently folds up and fits inside.

It is frequently pointed out on Jersey boats that "rolling trash cans" are not permitted on board.

Thank you for bringing this topic up PF...you are right, there are alot of people out there that don't know! When they show up with these types of bags at the boat, it usually indicates that they are not an experienced diver...not always...but in most cases.

When people check sometimes they bring their equipment to the shop, other times they just bring it to the boat the first day. If they bring it to the shop in their big rolly bag, I have them take out the essential gear (mask, fins, BCD, reg) and I put their stuff in one of OUR mesh bags...

If they are bringing their equipment to the boat, I tell them that we have no room for a big bag, if they don't have a mesh bag, I provide one for them.

When people are coming from the mainland, I try to tell them before they come over that we can't accommodate wheely bags.

No wheely bags on the boat!!!! Invest is a mesh gear bag for boat diving...you can get a really good one for $30 to $50. Stahlsac makes some of the most durable ones out there!

Yup, mesh bags are very affordable, $30 to $50. It is to your credit, Christi, that you are one of the nice people that point out the obvious to them.

I would qualify that and state that they are not experienced "LIVEABOARD" divers. I'm sure that many experienced divers have made this mistake once. Do the instructions from the fleet owners that you get before departing not state this?

Depends on the liveaboard. On our recent Belize trip with the Nekton folks, we had our big rolly Akona bag with all our gear on the boat. We unloaded our gear, set it up, and pushed the big bag under the bed for the week.

That's different because you need the big rolly bag to get your stuff onto the large liveabord ship. I'm talking about bringing that big rolly trunk onto the set up deck were all the divers are setting up to do a dive. You did the right thing by putting it under your bed and taking your gerar in a mesh bag up on deck. Wish these other selfish divers left the rolly polly things under their beds.
