I was looking at the same thing. But the I checked into a package deal (air & hotel) from different travel sites. Was flexible on travel dates. Booked through Orbitz (special thanks to board members here that listed a dicount code that cut $200 off the price -200entertain). After deducting the going airfare cost to Cozumel I got the Wyndham Sabor AI for $68 a nite solo. Fiqured out to be a great deal for me. Hope this helps.

As far as the bus option perhaps if you are used to mass transit (Boston, NY) or really pinching to afford the trip. However, with your luggage, etc IMHO that would be a long miserable ride.
The bus from Cancun airport to Playa is much more luxurious than any commuter transit you'd find in the US or Europe. They have comfortable cushioned reclining seats, seat belts and trunks underneath the bus to stow the luggage. Nothing miserable about that ride.

I thought Playa del Carmen was pretty cool. I stayed at Casa de Gopala
I think on either second or fourth street between avenue 5 and avenue 10.
I 'm pretty sure the bus did make another stop when leaving PDC but on the
way to PDC I'm pretty sure it went right to the station on avenue 5 very
close to the ferry dock.

I should clarify. I'm talking about the local bus service and yes it would be miserable with luggage. The shuttle type services, bus or shuttle van, are nice.

from where i live in fl it is not only much cheaper but also much faster to go through cun. if your flight connects nicely with a bus, take the bus. it was $8.50 last time if i recall. if the bus is not a good connection take a collectivo van. have not done that for a long time but i am guessing about $20. the ferry is about $14. i actually enjoy sitting outside sometimes seeing dolphin while listening to local musicians play for tips. expensive cold cervesa is served. nice way to gear down after a day of travel. if you are staying downtown (which is best imo), a tricycle will take your luggage to your hotel for whatever you think is fair. same getting from bus station to ferries in playa.
my fuzzy old noggin will attempt to tell you where to get more detailed info on connections with bus times, ferry times etc. google up cozumel discussion board. at top of page click on cozumel. at left of page click on getting cun-coz. you can also look back on postings here. i think it is kentmoredave who posts help on making the "drag bag" cun-coz. aldora's site also has info.
warning ferry times seem to change frequently. last i recall there is a 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, and then every hour. don't take that to the bank though.
getting back to the airport is a little easier. when you get off the ferry in playa cabdrivers will ask you if you need a ride. offer $40 to go to airport they will quickly agree. if not, start to walk towards the bus terminal. they will then agree.
if you have time, playa is a fun town to spend a couple nites in.
btw, jetblue now has fll-cun for $59. spirit may be less but i would pay more and go jetblu.

Five years ago my wife and I did the flight into Cancun, then bus and ferry to Coz. The last 4 years we've flown direct to Coz, and will do so again in about 3 weeks. Cutting out the Cancun, bus and ferry portion is definitely worth the airfare difference of flying into Coz. For non-divers carrying less luggage it may be worth the fare savings to fly to Cancun, but I wouldn't recommend it to those who have the added gear. It's a delight to retrieve our luggage at the Coz terminal and then spend 5 minutes in a group taxi (van) to our hotel. Flying out of Coz is just as much a delight because we get to spend an extra hour or so on the island. If we were talking about a $300 pp price difference, I would schlep the gear from Cancun but add 2 days to my time in Coz just to cancel out the irritation.

I recommand taking a triciclero and not a taxi between the 5 Ave Playa Del Carmen bus station (can't miss it, it's the last stop) and the ferry, as the taxis can't go all the way to the dock. If you're on your own and don't have too much luggage, the triciclero will insit that you climb onto the cart for the ride as well, otherwise it's an easy 5 min walk alongside him.
Yes, of course. :silly: I think the walk with triciclero & luggage to where the cabs park is almost as far as the walk to the 5th Ave station. I said that he tried; I guess I should have included that it was a ripoff offer but thot I had made that clear. Sorry.
There are two bus stations in PDC, it seems. One time arriving there by ferry from Coz, a taxi driver tried to get me to use him to go to one. Had I not known where the closer one was and how to get walk 4 blocks to it, I probly would have let him charge me whatever to go to the other one. I think the PDC to CDC airport bus stops at both. Yeah, here we go...
I did share a cab once with a honeymoon couple the time I evacuated for hurricane Dean. At 6am, in the dark, not having any idea what we should pay, where the bus station was, how long it would take, anxious about my evacuation hitting a snag, etc - I split the $60 fare! with them, with some of my luggage sitting between them. Another ripoff cabbie I guess?

Yeah, I think the bus I took went from Cancun direct to the 5th Ave station, but on return stops by the other station the crook tried to take me to - but I was on the Cancun city bus both ways so was not sure if the airport bus did too?

I don't thin the bus had a lavatory and the station stalls require Mexican coins so have some handy and consider a visit before boarding. I sleep so well on planes, ferries, buses, long cab rides - sometimes I miss things, fortunately they wake you up to leave if you don't on your own on arrival, but the bus was quite comfy.

Whether you take a bus, cab, or van - Cancun airport does have free luggage carts, which was kind of surprising as it seems that the country tries to create jobs sometimes, like no self serve gas, no carts at Coz airport, tricicleros at ferry docks.

The bus I took from downtown Cancun to Playa ferry stopped both in Puerto Morelos and at the "other" Playa bus station. Don't remember if it was the case with the airport one. Not that it really matters : the "ferry" stop is the last one, so can't be missed.

About the taxis, I just wanted to point out that, no matter how much they charge you, taking a cab from the 5 Ave bus station to the ferry doesn't make sense since you still have to walk all the way to the boat.

Oh really? I didn't know that any of the Cuncun city to PDC buses stopped at Puerto Morelos? If mine did, I slept thru it. I've read that the Cancun airport to PDC buses do not.

Yes, of course - I agree totally. I tried to be clear on that both times but maybe I wasn't. The crooked cabbie was trying to trick me into paying for a ride to the other PDC station when my walking to the 5th Ave station was as easy as walking to his cab.

Sometimes Cancun is a cheaper, than Coz; sometimes it's not. I agree that $100 saved is not enough to go thru Cancun - unless you want to do some days on the peninsula, to dive cenotes, tour ruins? Then you might coordinate that way, perhaps with an Open-Jaw, fling into Coz, out of Cancun? I can't suggest a PDC hotel tho; I tried one I would not use again once. :(

You didn't say when exactly, but a spot check shows non-stop flights any day of the week for $423 total. Would you like help shopping for tickets? There are many tricks.

Well, I see Air Trans will do Cancun for $297 or Delta $321, both non-stop, but not worth it to me.

When comparing Airtran to Delta remember Airtran charges for all bags and Delta lets the first bag fly for free on international fights.

We sometimes do the bag drag and sometimes fly direct to Coz. Depending on dates and prices. If both are nonstop and we can save a net $200 we will do the bag drag. I am actually doing the bag drag next weekend with Spirit. Finally got to use some of the sky miles on the off peak rates. Only 5000 miles (instead of 25000) Also got an orbitz deal for room and a car for $45 per day at Villa Blanca. Free breakfast included.
