Diving local might work in Sonora California, but I live in Ohio. The water in my yard gets pretty deep in the Spring as the snow melts, but not deep enough.

Quarry dives are a over 2 hours and 30 minutes driving each way if I stop to pick up a tank and return it. The water is cold, the quarries are small, and there isn't much to see.
You are 2 hours from Barcelona NY. Home of Osprey dive charters and some of the best wreck diving in the world. You are 6 hours from Lake Huron which has probably the absolute best wreck diving in the world. Why would you drive 2.5 hours to a quarry when you can drive two and hang out with Captain John?

Isn't Bonaire more expensive than Curacao? Curious that nobody has mentioned Curacao yet in this thread. I'm also in Ohio but Detroit is my airport. I had an amazing trip recently to Utila and it was dirt cheap but we were doing courses so had "free" rooms. The A/C upcharge was $40 per night at Paradise Divers. Or what about Roatan?

If you are going to the Virgin Islands skip St Thomas and go to St Croix. The diving is much better and it is less commercialized. Very good shore diving as well as 4 shops with dive boats.
