When I was younger, my brother and I heard this tail about the engine in the river as well.. ( pre internet). we used to jump off a train trussel in Manchester NH and were always told about the train engine down below the trussel. well. It is in the same river only about 50 miles down river... Odd how Urban Legends seem to spread like this.

Forgive me for bumping a 5 year old thread:

I work for the Maine DOT and stumbled across this site about a year ago when we were doing work on the Sarah Long Bridge in Kittery/Portsmouth. In our attempt to build a new bridge, we had serious concerns regarding the location of this mysterous train engine, and how it may impact the construction of pier footings for the new bridge.

After scanning the bottom of the river with LiDAR, we have an extremely clear image and location of two train cars, as well as other features of the river bottom roughly 1/4 mile upstream and downstream from the bridge.

If anyone is still interested, I can provide both a wonderful image of the bottom of the river in this area, as well as pin point locations for the two rail cars.

I have absolutely zero diving experience (to be honest, the thought of being underwater for extended periods of time kind of frightens me), but I appreciate the opportunity to share some information with the diving community.

Nick, I'll send you a PM, but I'm very interested in the pictures.

Thanks!

I'd be very interested in those images as well. I've dove the engine and had to turn back due to current before I got much time to explore the second car.

FYI - If any of you are curious about the obstructed objects on that chart, I can get your the coordinates for those as well. We have no idea what those are, but we have a hunch that they are sunken vessels of some sort.

Can the photos and details be posted on here for all to see? This is kind of a neat story and it is great to see someone showing up offering fresh information. Thanks for bumping (or "reviving" ;)) the old thread.

yea would love to the info :-)

I hope this is OK but I was forwarded the email and since it is being distributed, I suspect posting the info here will not be an issue. If it is, please let me know immediately and I will remove these.....

It's not an issue at all, and I should have posted it from the start.

Here is a bunch of information regarding what we've found. The Google Earth image has coordinates, and names each obstruction in our mapping scan.

I'm also attaching .jpg images that are titled with the name of each obstruction. These .jpg images are the highest resolution images that we have available from the laser scan that was performed.

Let me know if I can help with any other information.

PS - If anyone does make a dive in this area and ends up photographing any of these obstructions, I'd love to see the pictures!

Thanks!

EDIT---Ok...I'm not seeing a place to put attachments. Do need special privileges to attach images? Maybe someone could help me here...

Images will be posted soon :)
