Topside in Roatan

Don't feel bad. Developement on Roatan is taking the island to hell in a handbasket pretty quick.

In 2007 in the Galeria de Coxen Hole Mall they are opening a Starbucks.

The Naturalist (Nekkid) Resort went bankrupt because of the damned Sand Flies (aka: No-See-Ums, Sand Fleas, etc). Club Med stepped in and has bought the entire East End of the Island from them and is going to re-open as Club Dread (no)Roatanlines.

For 2008 there's going to be the third golf course and a Nascar Track.

I suppose I should have ended my comment with an "lol" or something. I was more entertained by the post than anything (as usual with Roatanman's posts) There always seems to be humor mixed in with the information. It was not meant as an attack. If it came off that way I apologise.

One of the problems with online forums is that you don't have the nuance of tone, facial expression, etc... Taken in that light, I get your point

I will actually be in Roatan in two weeks so I am looking forward to many of those topside activities.

Thanks for the suggestions! I totally agree with keeping it uncommercialized. I just wanted to know how to kill a few hours topside my last day. I can only lie on the beach for about 10 minutes and I'm bored.

Seriously, though- we have no vote as to the further commercialization of any island... but for voting with our wallets by not going.

Commercialization and development will come. We saw what happened in Cayman and Nassau/Freeport with early and slow development. It still resulted in a mess.

What is happening in the Bay Islands is an accelerated version, neon lights included. How ya' gonna keep 'em down on the farm- once they've seen MTV?

I didn't see anyone mention the canopy tour in Roatan. Swing through the jungle on a steel cable. That was pretty neat.

For NorthernMelody re: Topside in Utila:

Horseback riding, Sterlin is an AWESOME guide!
Hiking, the Bat Cave is kinda cool but Batman & Robin were off that day, the freshwater cave was also fun.
Patrick's has an assortment of water toys/trips to rent, jet skis, banana rides, parasail (weather permitting), among other things.
A water taxi out to Water Cay for the day was fun.
Sailboat charters (somewhat seasonal depending on who's in port)
The Whale Shark excursions
My personal favorite aside from the trail rides is to rent an ATV & hit the back roads to go exploring. There are some pretty amazing unspoiled places in Utila if you just get out of town a bit.

There's also a 'Movie Theater', and if you need to work out, there's a new Gym that's very well equipped & offers daily, weekly, monthly & yearly memberships. There's also some great small bars/restaurants that are great places to meet people from all walks of life & nationalities.

And of course, this IS still Honduras, so there's always a football(soccar?) game up at the field.

Pretty much everything is within walking distance or a short bike ride (which are available for rent).

Utila is VERY laid back, think Roatan 20 years ago, long before the cruise ships & condos. It has an amazing mix of people from the local culture, to the various nationalities that have come here to do dive courses.
