I just don't see a good comparison between full cave and Trimix. Since, we are talking Tech divers and some don't venture into caves it's probably a good marker.

I agree. I think cave is way too specific to put it as a requirement. It could be a requirement for the cave sub-forums, but not for the more generalized parent forum.

I personally think we should run a poll for entrance... on top of the certifications. Make this truly a forum for discussion among true peers...

Qualified newcomers would have a hard time getting in, but its not like they couldn't attempt being voted in again after awhile of "getting to know them on other forums".

Maybe we should emulate some of the recruiting practices done by this organization:

"The full requirements to become a Hells Angel are the following: candidates must have a valid driver's license, have a working motorcycle and cannot be a child molester or have applied to become a police officer or prison guard.

After a lengthy, phased process, a prospective member is first deemed to be a 'Hang-around', indicating that the individual is invited to some club events or to meet club members at known gathering places.

If the Hang-around is interested, he may be asked to become an 'Associate', a status that usually lasts a year or two. At the end of that stage, he is reclassified as 'Prospect', participating in some club activities, but not having voting privileges, while he is evaluated for suitability as a full member. The last phase, and highest membership status, is 'Full Membership' or 'Full-Patch'.

To become a full member, the Prospect must be voted on by the rest of the full club members."​

I'm not sure that the goal is to increase the quantity, but quality. We've already got quantity going on in technical diving. I think the GUE forums are turning out to be the source for quality information, even if it's in limited doses.

I agree that there is a lot of quality there. However, I see two problems with what goes on there. First, it is fairly limited. There are few places for people to hear anything that isnt strictly controlled by the leadership. Sure, discussions about scooter batteries and such are interesting, but I would like to see more discussion about deco. Sadly, that doesn't happen, because only if youve taken certain classes are you ever allowed to think about it. Even then, you're opinion (unless you are certain set of individuals) is disregarded. An example would be the recent thread about 25/25 and the use of 30/30. Not much discussion there really, it was much more of a "why are you going against our brilliant standard gas?" I feel like here we can have a much better discussion about things like that, even if people have differing opinions. Second, it doesn't really include lots of other people that should be included because it is based on a small subset of the tech diving community.

It is great for what it is meant for--a place to discuss GUE, but I think a much larger forum like SB needs to be much broader.
