maybe you're right on with liability.

maybe they don't want to give people the idea of experimenting on their on. I have a feeling that a lot of it is 'pressure' from the manufacturer. I know of one shop that will sell about any reg parts kit it stocks, but only had one brand kit sold online with 'add to cart' option.

with the you have to phone and ask for it option, it keeps it off the internet and out of the obvious problems of manufacturer direct hassling the dive shop.

Yes, and it makes you wonder how a gray market retailer gets such effective pressure from the mgfr!! 10 years ago, DiveInn sold Scubapro (Mare & Aqualung also I believe) parts on their web site at great prices. Apparently SP shut them down at least from a USA destination standpoint. I believe some EU countries will not allow mfgrs to restrict the sale of such parts. But, again, sources in GE are no longer allowed to ship to the USA. And with the falling dollar, it's cheaper to buy the in the back alley now anyway.

I believe the mfgr restrict the sale of parts to divers as a means to force us (divers) to do frequent business with their (mfgr) real customers, the LDS. Thankfully, some are starting to break from the herd.

My understanding is that it is the law in this country also. A manufacturer can not hold a customer hostage for service and not sell him/her parts. You will not find an auto manufacturer that will not sell you parts…even for life support brake parts, etc.

What I have heard is that there in no enforcement of the law in the Scuba industry because no one has challenged it in court and their just no good place to report it. The industry gets away with the excuse that it is life support equipment and no one really challenge it…due to the cost of going to court.

I have heard most of this from several sources, but I am not a lawyer so I don’t know how accurate it could be. Can someone confirm (or correct) any of the statements above?

I have called 10 dealers from California to the midwest and east ,all of them told me that Aqualung closely Monitors the price they sell there regulators for.
The price ranged from 360.00 to 410.00
All of them said that the price they were giving me was the lowest Aqualung
would let them go.
How come oceanic will let there authorized dealers put there regs on sale sometimes for 100.00 off , and also advertise those prices on the internet,
but Aqualung and scubapro dealers act like there under communist rule.
I think when a company only allows the dealers 10% wriggle room they are trying to hide there Gigantic mark ups.
If those two companys would allow dealers to sell there regs for what they want and advertise it on the net, there gigantic mark ups would be exposed!

I think the "liability" issue of selling parts is complete and utter BS. Just look at any Autozone or PepBoys where apparantly the Auto industry holds no liability if I choose to go and Buy/Replace my brakes (or ANYTHING else I'd wish to buy/replace) , so that "argument" simply doesnt hold any water for me. They dont want to sell parts so they can keep charging you that "deal" of an $80 annual service call (thats probably not needed anyways).

Nemrod did you ever buy a reg from liesure pro? and how did you go about getting it serviced?
If not what would you do to insure that the gear works the way it should.
You most likely service your own stuff, but i have never serviced a reg.
so i would have to find someone who could.

I bought my Mares regs from LP and you know where I bring them for service? My local shop. They're smart enough to know that even though they didn't sell them to me, they can make something off of service. I'm not asking them to service them for free...just to charge me a fair market price for service. Dealers sell service. To refuse to service my equipment because I didn't buy it there is crazy. I suppose if I move to another state, I'll have to return to this one to get my equipment serviced. After all, I didn't buy any of it in the new state that I might move to. If a dealer that's authorized for a certain piece of equipment that I want serviced, and they refuse to service it because I didn't buy it there...it will be the last time they get to see me or any of my hard earned dollars. They don't have to service my equipment...and I don't have to spend my money there. It's a pretty simple system really.

Now, I recently bought a set of Apeks doubles regs from one of my LDS's...but they gave me a fair price and had them in stock so that I could leave with them that day. Those two things together lead to my purchase on the spot.

I donot like the fact that i have to either pay a big price or buy from a nonAuthorized dealer.
So i purchased a Oeanic GT3/CDX5 diaphram regulator from scuba toys for
299.95 Thats about 125.00 off:D
my buddy has this reg and he says its a good one.
it is enviromentaly sealed and has a diver adjustment knob for Breathing adjustment .
Sorry aqualung But you made me do it.
besides i got a pro pluss 2 i got fom subatoys and i like it alot.
I have a oceanic dealer not to far away, but scuba toys is an authorized dealer to,and i like those guys:D
I still think aqualung is a good product but i think the reg i got is comparable
to the TiTan LX and will do anything it will do.

Great move. I love the stories that end with the good guys winning.:D

Ditto.

I dont' know how the above in bold can be true about how Aqualung "monitors the price they sell for". Any dive shop that allows any manufacturer into it's retails sales reports is just STUPID.

Aqualung does allow officially for their dealers to only discount 10%. Some AL dealers won't even do that.

If you can't get 20 to 25% off MSRP on an AL product, then buy another brand.

They make good regs, but when they sell to LP and then lie to their dealers about it and then most of their dealers try to sell you the "same kool-aid" they got sold, why support a LDS that doesn't support its customers.
