Has anyone done any diving in the Thumb Area Preserve. I'm specifically looking for the best recreational level dives out of Port Austin. I've done the Dunderberg and Glenorchy out of Harbor Beach.

I'll be there for two days of diving in June. Looks mostly like deep diving but I'm hoping for some good rec level dives.

Thanks,

Andy

The Philladelphia is/was suberb. The Albany, which collided with the Philladelphia and is nearby, is also a good wreck, although not as intact as the former. It has been a few years since I dove either. As you've mentioned, most of the stuff up there is out of the rec range. Good luck and we'll look forward to more of your great photography from the Thumb.

Oh yeah, the Goliath off Harbor Beach is supposed to be nice and interesting. I've never been on it, so I can't comment first hand.

2nd the Philadelphia and Albany.

It is truly tough finding 'rec' level diving charters from the Thumb. Most that are aren't all that interesting.

What dates are you going to be there? I'm supposed to be diving out of there on the 1st of June. Actually were supposed to leave out of Grindstone city. The plans are kind of iffy right now. The Philedelphia was mentioned. If were their around the same time, maybe we can have an After dive Drink.

Tentatively I think it's June 10th and 11th.

Philadelphia and Albany are great wrecks...Both are in the limits of 130 ish but both can be done on REC profiles. Also they make for nice easy tech wrecks. Dove them last year and had over 100' of viz on the Albany and about 60-70' on the Philadelphia. Good luck!

That's good to hear. I'd love that kind of viz.

It has been many years since I have dived to the recreational depths in that area. Chris Roth supposedly found a wreck in 80ft of water up there but I have not dived it. I have been onthe Philadelphia and 12 years ago it was a great dive... I like the Artic up there (it may be further south) and if I had a boat I would want to dive the caverns near the Port Austin Light... I have heard some exciting rumors about those.

A little further south lies the governer smith which I am looking forward to venturing out on this summer and there is always the bow of the Morrell which is deep but starts at 100ft with the pilot house at 130.

I am up there to do some Technical dives (and training) June 7 and 8 (Harbor Beach) so if you are up there we need to get together for a beer or two

See you at the Quarrry this summer!

Rich
