I'm not sure which 'Roth' wreck Rich is referring to. Years ago I was on the Troy (90-some ft deep) and was less than impressed. Also dove a barge they found that was a bit shallower. All I can recall is a flat deck and nothing else. Don't get me wrong - I LOVE jigsaw puzzles (lumber piles for those that don't love 'em). They allow me to piece the ship together in my mind and to get a better feel for how the ships were built.

A lot of effort has been put into finding more rec depth. I thank all the people and hope their efforts pan out.

I've heard of people diving an area with a bunch of abandoned grindstones.

It has been many years since I have dived to the recreational depths in that area. Chris Roth supposedly found a wreck in 80ft of water up there but I have not dived it. I have been onthe Philadelphia and 12 years ago it was a great dive... I like the Artic up there (it may be further south) and if I had a boat I would want to dive the caverns near the Port Austin Light... I have heard some exciting rumors about those.

A little further south lies the governer smith which I am looking forward to venturing out on this summer and there is always the bow of the Morrell which is deep but starts at 100ft with the pilot house at 130.

I am up there to do some Technical dives (and training) June 7 and 8 (Harbor Beach) so if you are up there we need to get together for a beer or two

See you at the Quarrry this summer!

Rich

Sounds great Rich. I think I'll just miss you. I will be diving the bow the the Morrell in August along with the Dunderberg again.

I haven't heard anything about the caverns. That sounds cool. I'll try and find more info.

Thanks.

Bladephotog - I've been curious about the Dunderburg. We are in the U.P. and it would be about a five hour drive. Is it worth it? We dive mostly towards the Wisconsin side (Milwaukee/Manitowoc area) and I've always wanted to dive it, but haven't found anyone around here who has made the trip. Thanks for any help you can give me.

It's absolutely worth the drive IMO. It's a great wreck. Here is a link to some photos I shot in 2006.

I talked to Chris Roth yesterday. We're diving with him. But he has only heard rumors about the caverns as well. I'd love to know if anyone has any specifics on where these are.

Thanks,

Andy

If you make it to Alpena again don't miss a chance to dive our sink holes. Unfortunately the only easily accessible one is 100' north of Middle Island (75' deep) even though almost all the other diveable ones are on State land. An expedition might be arranged but serious thought would need to be put into it. There is another hole in the Long Lake "Narrows" reportedly 150' deep. I am not yet comfortable diving that one... yet, as it can become a syphon. The water levels there can vary 20-30' over the course of a year and it should be dove when the levels are stable.

While diving the Thumb ask about the 8000 year old submerged forest...it might be closer to Sanilac. The time frame is close to what Capt. Pete found up at Munising. I like to use it's existance to demostrate how long our shipwrecks might be around.
