]Sam, was there another wreck called the Avalon? The Great White Steamer that once brought thousands of visitors to Catalina now rests off Palos Verdes.

I am aware that there are many documented and undocumented wrecks in and around Catalina I did not post this a s laundry list of Catalina wrecks but rather two wrecks which I was witness tio heir demise and that had significant impact or involvement in diving .

I cannot make a connection between the GWSS the Avalon and diving other that it is a local wreck-- perhaps you can ???
And of course the GWSS who's name I have forgotten was sold for $ 11,000.00 (eleven thousand !) towed to Ensenada and left to rot away-- look up in your Funk and Wagnalls or Google the name of that one .

That would of course be the S.S. Catalina. No need to look that one up. I was simply asking if there was another ship named Avalon that you dived while on Catalina Island
.

Only Max...I could have asked the question to 99 % of all current divers and they would have given me a blank stare?
And of course not known the answer...Only Max....And good for you that you have an expanded knowledge of diving ! I applaud you ! ( Mrs. Miller and I often traveled deep into Baja on the way passing the S.S. Catalina watching it slowly rot away at anchor)

Now to step the diving knowledge a little by another question that should also allow the OP
@Ken Kurtis and our Catalina expert @Dr bill to play...and old friend Mark if you are on line...

"What roll did the GWSS play in the development of Catalina divers in the 1940s and 1950s while the boats were in operation?"

When body surfing back to the exit, do most experienced divers prefer vest/bp-wing/sidemount? And is there a c-card for this?

Great video by my friend Mark Guccione. Of course this particular event was greatly assisted by a very high tide. I've seen much worse events that caused not only loss of vessels, but also lives. Tomorrow they will dedicate a memorial plaque for one of those who died, Tim Mitchell, instructor for SCUBA Luv, tech diver and harbor patrolman.
