I'm thinking about booking a trip to the East End and diving with Ocean Frontiers in October. I know that's hurricane season and a risk I'm willing to take. Seems like lots of people like OF as an op. How is the East End diving compared to other areas of Grand Cayman? The last few years I've been to Belize (Ambergris Caye), Curracao, Cozumel and Dominica. Anybody want to compare any of those to East End diving? Viz, sea life, etc? Thanks for any help.

I like the beach better on Seven Mile Beach so I rented a car and drove to the East End. (See my recent Cayman report for pics and vids). Ocean Frontiers is an excellent dive service and they will treat you well, not to mention the reefs looked better on the East End than the West Wall.

Thanks for the thought, and I understand your logic, but there's no way I'm driving an hour to go diving on a vacation.

My 2cents ... its a very nice drive and is definitely less than 1h. My wife & I often do the "east end loop" drive on week-ends just for fun and have a packed lunch at the public beach . Its lovely scenery and a world away from the action of George Town. I highly recommend going at least once to the east end during a vacation here ; in your case do a dive at the same time. :-)

Cheers

Where are you thinking about staying?

billinwilliamston,

When was your last trip down? I go by Topcat on the Morritts Owners forum. Diving was wonderful last month.

Where are you thinking about staying?

I was thinking of staying at Compass Point. I know all about the relative quietness of East End vs. Georgetown/SMB and the pros and cons of that. What I'm really trying to figure out is will the East End diving entertain us enough to make the trip a good one. I've heard a few reports about lack of marine life in Cayman over the past few years, but it seems like that's true for all dive areas. Some of the staff at my LDS are very down on Cayman after a few recent staff trips there, the last one saying for instance that the walls and depths were great but the fish life was significantly less than a recent trip to Cozumel.

I'm really just trying to figure out how the East End compares to the diving on other areas of Grand Cayman ( I'm already assuming not as good at Cayman Brac or Little Cayman) and in part I guess I'm trying to figure out whether I should take a second dive trip this year (did Dominica in June) or save that money and maybe head to the Pacific next year instead of the Caribbean.

Here is a compromise if you want to stay "almost" between the east end and SMB

www.Turtlenestinn.net

I own a condo there ,if you would like any info just PM me and I will give you my phone number. They are located in Boddentown.

Interesting alternative. How far a drive from Boddentown to East End?
