Can we please keep the posts insult-free and only criticise people's ideas not themselves as people? I don't want this thread locked like the other one as I find these topics really interesting :)

If we all tick nearas off enough, he will eventually be looking at a forum that contains nothing but "sorry you cannt see this post because the user is on your ignore list" messages.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Please stop the ad hominem posts; the thread is first cousin to the Dodo as is

What have you found interesting, so far?

That philosophy, science, and religion deal with totally different issues, and are unrelated?

The what-if's of philosophy?

The experimentation of science?

The why's of religion?

The difference between a guess, a thought, an hypothesis, an experiment designed to test an hypothesis, or a theory as to why hypotheses are supported by experimental findings?

Or what other atheists like yourself believe to substitute for religion?

Which? Or something else?

All of those I find interesting. :) And I agree strongly with the first point in particular. Also, I don't have a substitute for religion... I am not sure why I would need something to go in its place, given I have no need for religion.

I'd have to agree with yo on that. For those of us who are fulfilled in life, and have no void inside there is no need for religion. I am totally happy with who i am, what i do, and what i intend to do. Religion IMO is just a crutch for certain people to stand on. Those who dont need constant reminders to be good people find religion useless.

Some folks could not walk without the aid of a crutch. Just watch out for those who would swing the crutch like a club.

OUCH!!!

Watch it. That was my head!

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able, and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"

Seriously, with all respects to the OP, this is a GREAT thread......

I find that having a values system IS important... both to me personally and to society as a whole. While mine is not a recognized religious one, it is built on many of the precepts of my religious upbringing as a Protestant. One of the major problems I see in today's society is a lack of any values system among a certain percentage of the population.

My values do not require a Creator to exist. However, I have no problem with the belief that there might be one. I will live my life adhering to my principles because I think they have value, not because I am threatened with punishment if I do not.
