First beach dive with my video camera... I was bummed that we didn't see any octopi this time.

48ft? at redondo? how does one only go down to 48ft? Even students go below that, lol. that means you stopped a third of the way down the canyon slope, that's not easy to do! there are always lots of octos at redondo, they are usually between 50 and 70ft.

ha ha 48ft
sorry, I just got a kick out of that! I hope you don't mind a little teasing, its all in jest

ps - here's an octopus from last night at redondo

Took my brother to Wood's cove for his first time there. Entry was a piece of cake. There were some decent sets rolling through, but they were really spaced out. Dropped into about 15 fsw, and headed out at 210d. Lots of neat life out. Pretty surgy until we hit about 25 fsw, otherwise, a pretty unremarkable--though fun--dive.

Exit was even easier. Yay!

Drove down the road to Shaw's for an easier dive at night. Plan was to enter at Fishermans to play in the Grotto, then head over to Shaw's west and play around. Just as I started to kick out to our drop point, I looked into the water and my light perfectly lit up a small (2' or so) leopard shark cruising through the shallows. I kept my light on him long enough for my brother to come over, and he didn't seem to mind us a bit. Swam around nice and slow for a while until we let him be. He had a pretty big gash in his right pectoral fin; either something was trying to eat him, or he was in a bad fight.

Lots of surge everywhere here tonight (though viz seemed to be holding up pretty well at both spots). It might have been a strange tide, though I'm not sure. In any event, it was a little rough in the grotto, so we headed out pretty quick. Lots of bugs in the grotto, however, and a lot of beady eyed shrimp out as well. Speaking of lobster: I call first dibs, so if everyone could just wait until I've caught enough the first couple of nights of the season, I would appreciate that. Thanks! ;)

As we dropped back into Shaw's over the divider reef, I saw an enormous halibut out of the corner of my eye. He was several feet in length, and like the shark, had a rather sizeable injury on his back. It was a pretty round gash, so I wonder if something like an eel took a quick chunk before the fish could get away. He wasn't afraid of us either, and let us watch him for a while.

In the sand at Shaw's were dozens of thornback rays, which were new to me. Neat animal, and not the least bit afraid of us. Lots and lots of fish were out also. The crevice was going crazy with surge, so we didn't go in very far. We saw the remnants of a beast of a lobster on our way out though. The carapace was easily as wide as my hand is long. Hopefully, it was just a molting and he'll be there in a few months. Given the size, he'll probably eat me first.

Swam back into the shallows and thumbed it. The surf seemed to be building, but wasn't a problem.

Dive Location: Cabo (from Lands End to North Wall)
Buddy(ies): Divemaster Ivan and a few more
Bottom Time: 50 / 54 / 45 / 45
Max Depth: 72 / 82 / 74 / 92
Vis: 50 - 70 FT
Temp at depth: 78 / 77 / 75 / 77

Just got back from Cabo for 3 days of diving that turned into 2 thanks to hurricane Ileana. I went with Underwater Diversions and after speaking to the owner, seeing the operation and diving with them (Ivan is a great guide), I would have to say that they are the best dive operator in all of Cabo. The 2 days and 4 dives were awesome.

The day before I arrived they were visited by a whale shark out at Lands End. (DAMN! 1 day late….lol)

I just got my Olympus SP-350 with housing and it preformed perfectly. This is one great camera!

There is way too much to talk about so below are a few key pictures.

Interesting - I was there 2 weeks ago on an even shallower dive (I think we were between 30/40 the entire time) and saw 4 or 5 octos. Guess they were just feeling friendlier that night. :)

We didn't go deeper because I was diving with my video camera on a beach dive for the first time (task load #1), at night (task load #2), and my power inflator died on me so I was orally inflating the whole time (task load #3) - hence, we pretty much leveled at 40 and stayed put! I think my husband did feel a little cheated that I didn't want to check out the canyon more... next time!

The life belt starts there at about 38-ish to the slope. Its actually quite easy to stay below 48 there. That, in come spots and depending on the tide, is right on the lip of the canyon.

Comments: Not too shabby

'Chica is out of town this week, so Josh got stuck diving with the "B" team this week. Rolled in, found front row parking and hung out waiting for buddy to roll in.

As I'm sitting there, watching a glorious sunset, the Black Pearl rolls by. As my real cam housing is at Ike getting the once over, all I had was Jaye's pocket cam Sony P&S, so I braced it against a parking meter and got off a shot as BP crossed the setting sun. Much to the "Ooohs and Aahs" of the crowd. Kids going nuts, parents running around with cam corders, people holding up their phones to capture a black dot on the ocean. It was big hoo hah.

We suit up and splash. I'm in the double 85s, Josh in his new 130 - so we got gas o' pleanty. The plan was to roll to 100 - 110 or so to go find the Red Dorids. The last 4 dives there over the last 2 weeks I've taken it to 100+ I've seen them.

Tonight was octopus night. What a show. In about 25 feet of water on the kick out there is this Octo that sees me and makes a break for his home - a Corona Bottle. I was able to get a few shots as he crawled in. Too funny.

Another octo was saying "Hi" from a large snail shell. Still another one was peeking at us over a Kelp leaf... it was so darn cute. We saw dozens of them all over the place.

At about 80 feet Josh stumbled on this big Nudi (insert name here__________ it escapes me at the moment.) But its a silt out. I can't shoot it. So I'm all waiting for it to settle down (in Vets that takes awhile) and it dawns on me: Just move the guy to cleaner water. So I grab him to move him, and he goes all Pill Bug on me and starts rolling down the canyon!! I was cracking up.

I also saw this little Hermit Crab in a shell... sort of sitting on a larger shell kinda trying it on for size. Reminded me of a kid in daddy's huge shoes.

There were a lot of Baby Horn Sharks, lots of halibut, some Polycera Atra nudis, TONS of kelp fish, and the usual assortment of crabs, giant pink twinkie stars and the like. I think I saw a Midshipman - a funky tear-shaped fish with a huge mouth... We also came across these cool things - they look like Kelp, but as you got closer they were like a tree of barnicle thingys. Very interesting. I hope I see them again with a real cam.

Here are some pics. Enjoy.

PS: props to you people with P&S cams that create underwater art with them. I forgot about the shutterlag and the poor strobe and the limited zoom, no access to Manual mode and all the stuff I take for granted with my Nikon.
