Lets hope they do better with making shadow divers into a movie than they have with every stephen king book (exception of the Green Mile)

Always seems the movies are a bit of a letdown....

Actually, I heard that Ridley Scott is going to be directing (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Hannibal, Thelma and Louise, etc.) It is not going to be coming out until 2007, but it sounds like it will be good!

Don't forget that Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me are two good movies (if not great) that were Stephen King short stories. I agree that for the most part, directors/produces butcher the books, but not always. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it stays true to the book. The author did such a meticulous job trying to stay true to the way it really happened, it would be a real shame if it was "Hollywooded" too much.

I liked The Last Dive much more than Shadow Divers. So far Shadow divers seems to be a "Chatterton is a living god" tribute. It reads like the back story of a Chuck Norris/Rambo movie.

I had forgotten those two....

The hollywood factor is what scares me. Give hollywood their say on it and they'll give Chatterton and Kohler M-16s and have them fight off a group of nazis that are trying to recover the sub

Its written from a different point of view. The Last Dive wasn't REALLY about the identification of the 869. It was about the Rouses, with the 869 and Chowderbury's dances with DCI thrown in for good measure....A great book.

Shadow Divers is about the 869 and its history and identification. Finish the book, and i think you'll see that its written rather honestly.

Whether you like Chatterton or not, you can't deny that most likely the 869 would still be the U-Who without him and his efforts

Let's not go there again.

I don't know if y'all noticed, but there is a discrepency between Bernie Chowdhury's and Robert Kurson's account of what happened to the Rouses on the decks of the Seeker.

In the "Last Dive", Chatterton is telling the coastee rescue swimmer to take Chris in the chopper with Chrissy, so that the kid (Chrissy) will think his dad is okay. The rescue swimmer says to Chatterton....something like, "We aren't going to risk a lift for a dead guy." They finally take Chris up at Chatterton's urging.

In "Shadow Divers" Chatterton is arguing with the rescue swimmer to haul *** with Chrissy, because by the time the coastees got to the seeker, Chris was already dead.....Chatterton had been doing CPR for some time. Chrissy was still somewhat conscious and had a chance, if they got him to a chamber. Chatterton argued with the rescue swimmer to leave Chris on the seeker and get Chrissy outa there quick. Instead the coastees lifted Chris (delaying Chrissy from getting to the chamber for another 15-20 minutes).

On the History Channel forums, Chatterton was asked which account is true....he answered that Kurson's book was more accurate as to the details of the Rouse incident on the U-869.

Both are excellent books, written from different points of view. My mom, who doesn't dive, agreed that Shadow Divers was one of the best books she ever read. I think that I would read anything else that Kurson wrote, even if it wasn't dive related.

Other good books about all the NE Wreck diving: Deep Descent, Dark Descent, and Gentile's books (all of em). Deep Descent details the strife between Chatterton and Kohler over the 3rd Class China Room better than Shadow Divers....it was hilarious.
