Yep....
Goes back to when they first came out...
Buddy had one... wouldn't dive without it...
I bought one so I could feel secure too...
Played with it... seemed ok...
Bought one as a gift for another buddy who had a bad OOA habit...
Things went along fine... I never needed it....
Then one day while spankin' fish on a local 60 fsw reef I did something stupid....
SOB buddy had already run OOA and gone up...
I went after one more fish and ran my air down to ~300 psi....
But I had the Spare Air so no worries....
Then I had to unhook the anchor and hump 30 feet of 3/8" chain up over the reef before coming up....
But I had the Spare Air so no worries....
I didn't notice it was getting harder to breath because it is always harder to breath when you are dragging that much chain around boulders....
And then I was OOA...
I sucked one last 1/2 breath and pulled a vacuum on the AL80...
And found my Spare Air and flipped the little lever to turn it on...
In those days you had to turn them on... sort of a failsafe to keep the air from leaking out....
Then I took my useless second stage out of my mouth and plugged an equally useless Spare Air in...
It was totally flat... I have no idea how that had happened.... it had checked out good to go before the dive....
And I no longer had the 1/2 breath...
Well didn't do safety stops in those days anyway....
Obviously I made it...
But have you ever pretended to breath without moving any air by heaving your chest...
Try it sometime... let all the air out of your lungs and see how long you can go without inhaling... it isn't fun but heaving can extend your ability to keep from inhaling a few more seconds...
I'm glad we weren't at 130 fsw....
I figured I didn't need to take the Spare Air diving anymore....
I needed something else.... it took awhile and a few mistakes but I finally found it.
