Honestly guys. I'll admit alot of the GUE stuff makes sense. I dove with a long hose bungied to my doubles for a decade. And the long hose was yellow and it was my octopus not my primary. It worked for me great.

One day I realize that the "gooey" method was better. Primary hose being the long hose on the best post to avoid rolloffs. So I changed. Still most of what I do is simply to piss you guys off. Yes, YOU GUYS that keep claiming that i'm not, and I quote "doing it right". That was actually said to me word for word last month because my mask was clear and the necklace for my octo was orange. My method works great for me, it's worked for me long before "DIR" and "GUE" were known. And as I learn things I like, I'll adopt them, but please don't look down on me because my way is not your way.

Guys DIR people bring alot of this on themselves. I'm in a spot where I get to see all sorts of diving. Cave, Wreck, Newbies, Techies, Good, Bad and Ugly. With an open mind, the biggest jerkoffs are the vocal ones who say "you're doing it wrong". Which keeps getting spouted to me time and time again by complete strangers from the DIR crowd.

I truly hope that not all of you "DIR" guys are flaming idiots because that Scootergirl looks smoking hot.

Colors are not people. People tend to want to associate in "clubs" of like-minded individuals ... and hence focus on what divides us.

That's human nature ... and I guess if folks need a name for their club they'll create one ... but the divisiveness it engenders runs counter to the whole point of a recreational activity ...

I think the bigger issue is the hazy definition of DIR and the dilution of what DIR means (e.g. I would say NAUI Tech is DIR-influenced, but not DIR, however I've got PMs from NTEC folks wanting access to the DPF who disagree with me).

This is the biggest reason why the DIR term doesn't really mean much to me. There are at least 4 agencies off the top of my head (and probably many more) whose divers claim the DIR designation and have their own specific protocols. Easier for me to have discussions regarding specific protocols/values based upon agency destinctions and what my team at the particular moment chooses to adopt.

For my part, I value the training I've received from pretty much all of the agencies with whom I've trained. I'd like to think that I'm also open-minded enough to respect good divers from the entire alphabet soup spectrum of dive agencies regardless of a DIR designation or not. I've always hated this DIR versus the world mentality. I don't think that one way is necessarily better than the other, rather they're just different systems and you have to figure out what works best for you. To me, we're all just divers trying to hopefully get better, be safe, and have fun. The agency you select is just a vehicle like a model of car which you need to personally choose for yourself to try to get you there.

That's a pretty small minority of the DIR folks I've ever been exposed to ... mostly the newly DIRF'd who are like little puppies pissing all over themselves with excess enthusiasm. I dunno how it is in your neck of the woods, but around here the experienced DIR folks mostly just go out and dive, and don't worry much about what other folks are doing.

And let's face it, every club has a few members who just need to get attention by pissing everybody else off. That ain't unique to DIR.

FWIW, Superlyte, in my experience the most publicly derisive and critical of "DIR" divers are typically the crummier and insecure ones. The solid divers I know are confident enough in their own capabilities not to have to publicly deride another in order to pump themselves up. Take comfort in that those divers you ran into probably aren't the finest examples of system...

It's unfortunate that the term DIR seems to get so many people's panties in a bunch....I don't really get it.

I don't mind the use of the term DIR. In fact, we do lots of local DIR charters. We invite GUE divers, UTD divers, those who are curious about diving this way. A big part of the reason I don't mind the term is that it would be truly unfortunate (for the socal community) to have GUE charters only....or UTD charters only....or whatever.

I've taken classes through both UTD and GUE....I dive with divers who have taken classed through either agency....I dive with divers who are interested in diving the way we dive (but haven't necessarily taken any classes yet). FWIW, I know there are instructors from other agencies that teach this style too, and while I wouldn't say that NAUI/TDI/etc are DIR agencies, I think there are some instructors who probably are, and I would certainly dive with divers who have been trained that way. My criteria for a buddy is that he/she must be fun (topside and underwater), safe, and properly trained to the level we are diving at.

If someone can come up with something to replace DIR, I wouldn't have an issue with it....but I refuse to set up GUE/UTD/whatever-specific charters.
