If you're sure it's just a 75 day visit, and a good part of it is on Koh Tao...
get the tourist visa (easy to obtain) good for two months. When 60 days are up, go to Samui and get the one month extension. That's 3 months no hassle.

Or, to be honest, forget the Samui trip and go on one visa run. At the end of the day, a visa run costs 1900 baht (all included), you can do it in as short as a night and be back the following afternoon, or you can make it a two day trip an get a hotel room in Chumporn. Either way, you get your two months and the additional 15 days (14 including the day you arrive) which should take you up to your departure date. Going to Samui to get the extension costs 1900 baht just for the extension. On top of that is transportation and you have to stay overnight in Samui. It adds up quick. I don't know what's more important for you, the money or the time, but those are the factors to weigh.

As for what LK mentioned, he's right, getting a non-o or non-b, that is the best idea if you think there is ANY chance that you will stay longer. A year visa means you only have to cross the border once every three months and you save loads of time and money. You can get one in the states fairly easily. PM me if you want help with that. I have a contact who has proven to be trustworthy, but you need to do it sooner rather than later if you're on your way. Expect a few weeks turnaround at least.

I can tell you from first hand experience that with a non-o, they are stamping 3 months for re-entry at the Andaman club in Ranong (across from Burma). I was just there last week.

Good luck

If you are lucky like me to live not too far from the Thai consulate. I simply pay them a visit, no appointment needed, only an additional £5 is required. :)
And you walk away with your visa in less than 5 minutes, saves all the waiting.
