Alright, so I'm leaning toward SP Mk17's...What's the deal with DiveRite regs? In other threads I see a decent following, but no one's mentioned them here. Hurricanes are a good bit cheaper than Mk17/G250V's...But I can't really find anything that gives a side-by-side comparison...I figure at this point if I buy something that works well but I decide to try another reg I can try something different and get a duplicate of whichever I prefer for doubles and a stage when I get to that point..Use the matched pair for backgas and the oddball one for my stage bottle.

I like the idea that DR has parts kits available, how difficult is it to service the SP regs myself and to find parts for them? Obviously I'll take them to get serviced when possible, but in everything I do, I like to have the ability to repair my own gear if it faults while in use.

I bought a hurricane this year, used it for a couple months then bought two more. great breathing regs and you have two years between service to get the free parts.

plenty of room to get your hand in there.

Ah. Yes, I misunderstood your post.

It seemed like you were saying hose routing options don't matter for doubles, whereas you were referring to your specific problem.

I used to use Poseidon Cyclon's, but ended up having to get rid of them because I was finding it impossible to get them serviced in SE Asia.

They were replaced with Scubapro Mk25 & S600s, which also performed awesomely and lend themselves to a clean twinset routing. Of course, you can get Scubapro regs serviced anywhere....

Many of my friends dive with Apeks regs, as their design simplicity makes them a great option if you are competent enough to service/repair them yourself. Apeks recently introduced a new design first stage specifically for twinset/tech users.

Oh, yes. I didn't mean to imply that.

I just meant the 1st stages (DS4s; MK17,etc.) can be oriented to allow easy access to reach valves using doubles.

"Someone had mentioned Salvo's..How do DR's and Salvos perform? It seems like they've got kind of a clique following, which in my experience is produced either by hit-or-miss performance and quality, or just because the name isn't as well known..."

From what I have seen so far, Salvo puts out outstanding products. They have had a few issues with some of their new led lights when they first came out, but their customer service is unparalleled. Salvo is based out of the N. Fla area, so chances are if you arnt from there, you dont see their stuff a whole lot in shops. If you do not want to service your own stuff, you might want to go with a more popular brand that more shops will be familiar with (if you believe in the whole parts warranty thing).

Dive Rite also puts out great products and have very good customer service. Again, you will see a lot more of their stuff in cave country than in other places because that's the market they are more geared up for. As of now, I think they are still bigger than Salvo and charge a higher premium for their equipment even though much of it is of the same quality.

I have just converted my kit over to the Salvo regs to make it easier to service and make parts interchangeable.

Salvos and SP are looking like the headliner to me right now...I was leaning for Diverite, but I can't seem to dig up much information on them.

For someone who knows the Salvo lineup, what differences are there between the SR2 and SR3 first stages? They basically have identical descriptions on Salvo's site, they just look different...

Just in case you decide to buy Apeks, they seem to have mis-assembled 2nds out of their doors.
You'll see in their top page "Limited recall of Apeks TX, ATX and XTX 2nd Stages." Follow the link for details.
(I wanted to post a link, but I'm still not link-worthy says the system)

Don't mean to discourage Apeks; I'm waiting for my XTX200 to arrive!

Thanks for the heads up super7.

For colder water, you want an environmentally sealed kit. All of the suggestions thus far provide you with those options, but it seems nobody's actually stated this point.

The SP MK17, All the Apeks XTX regs, and a variety of others have this quality. I use the SP MK25 / S600 for most dives, find it does everything well. If I'm in water under 38 degrees, I use an Apeks XTX100 setup.

SP has the widest dealer and maintenance network, bar none. So if that's a concern, stay with SP. If you're doing a lot of cold water, Apeks has a fabulous reputation for handling it.

As for Dive-Rite, thier regs used to be manufactured for DR by SP. Not sure if that's still the case. Benefit there is that they use O2 clean lubricants and o-rings. So if you want to go to heliox or high nitrox for deco, you can easily do it. That said, any reg that's not made of titanium can be made O2 clean without much difficulty. You just need a trained regulator specialist to do it.
