DAN and PADI (and I'm sure other companies) offer several levels of coverage with some that do not specify a depth limit. I use the PADI "Gold Plan" which specifically has no depth limit. The "Silver Plan" has a depth limit of 130' for example.

I agree deep air should be avoided if possible with the availability of trimix. I will not dive air (or leaned Nitrox) below 160' which is my current depth limit. I'm an entry level tech diver. I find the 'most recognizable' impact of narcosis when I descend below 140' on air/leaned EAN. Although of course we all know the real impact occurs well before you 'feel' it.

StSomewhere:
Does anyone have a link to the actual TDI standards and procedures? Their website only has a couple sentences for each class...
TDI Canada used to have them up on their web page but they have closed and now TDI USA posts the standards here http://www.tdisdi.com/ but you must be a member to access them. Send them an email and see if they will post them publicly. I think an agencies standards should be considered before buying one of their training programs.

In SE FL, He is available at several shops for about .55 per cf. Some shops bank 21/35 and 30/30 for a discounted price.

Fill Express, Brownie's, and Dixie Diver all stock He. There are others as well.

The original poster mentioned he was looking for training around Ft Lauderdale where I am pretty sure helium is quite common. Yes I agree if I couldn't get helium and I REALLY wanted to go diving deep, Chuuk is a good example, I would do deep air dives. I personally am quite comfortable at 150ft or so on air (actually EAN25) but if I don't have to I won't and for sure if I lived in NZ the price of a rebreather would quickly be paid for by the cost of helium.

Rightiho. I missed that part. That will teach me for skim reading...
Thanks

TDI's ER and normoxic Trimix are now a combined course, mine was anyway. The ER part of it was more in terms of potential risks and adittional equipment associated with deeper dives, and as taught to me, looked at how to make my current dives (deco procedures level) safer rather than lets go out and dive deep air. So it kind of led into promoting the trimix side

If the courses were combined, you were lucky. I don't think they are combined at the agency level, but it sounds like your instructor gave you a break. The ER required dives are supposed to performed before the normoxic dives with He. Some IANTD instructors are pushing students though recreational trimix in order to allow them to use He in the ER dives. I think the ER course is stupid and a waste of the students money. The concepts of N2 Narcosis and Ox-Tox are well covered in all IANTD's courses.

Having completed Stage Deco, Ext Range, Basic and Advanced Trimix, I have the same view of the E/R course. Air or nitrox to 150 ft is fine, and not a major problem. However air to 180 ft serves no useful purpose. The only possible exception would be as training for dive locations that do not have access to Helium. However those locations are fewer and further between all the time.
