Hello everyone, I am refurbishing some steel 72s and am going to use ZRC Galvinite. I was wondering about how much is needed per tank. I am trying to decide on how much to pick up. Thanks

It just depend on how long you want the coating to last. The theory behind galvanizing is that the zinc in the coating is more susceptible to giving up an electron than steel. Therefore it corrodes (rusts) away and gives up electrons to the steel and to the corrosion causing element, saving the steel.

One good layer will probably last for years.

Just make sure not to fill in the stamped information on the neck of the cylinder or you will never be able to get them filled.

If you're using the spray cans and you're spraying over old galvanizing, I found that one can per tank was about right, maybe a little more than a can. If I was doing it over I'd use a small roller, or a professional spray gun.

If you're going over bare steel, use a lot more. I'd rough up the steel a bit as well.

I went down this road last spring. I wished I never did it. It took me a a can and a half of ZRC per tank. They are small cans. If I had to do it over I would use a small foam roller so you can put it on thicker (they have it in a can like residential paint comes in). The thicker the coat the better. Spray cans dont put much of a coat on. The manufactor says to put on a light coat and wait 24hrs between coats. This is so the zinc has time to do its thing.

Thanks for the info guys. I planned on rolling it on and was wondering how far the quart can will go. I planned on three coats per tank.
Thanks again

A quart should be enough.

Keep us posted. I am going to roll mine next time. I think the quart will be enough but you never know.
